Benefit for Mitchell (the power of MUSIC)

On July 23, our band was one of four acts to play a benefit for Mitchell Kato - a six year old boy who was mauled by a neighbor's pit bulls as he played in his front yard at home. His family is facing $145,000 in medical bills on a very limited income (and without medical insurance).

This benefit was organized entirely by musicians. Dennis Roberts (a local drummer) was at the forefront of the effort. I worked behind-the-scenes. Other musicians helped distribute flyers and get the word out. And every act agreed to play for free.

We were disappointed with the turnout. We didn't even raise enough money to cover the cost of the caterer. :(

BUT... we were able to get some news crews and reporters to come out. Footage of the benefit was broadcast on WMDT and WBOC (both Maryland tv stations). The Delaware News Journal published Mitchell's story in their Sunday edition. Let me tell you, the response has been overwhelming!

The original goal of the benefit ($5000) has been met and we are seeing more donations come in every day. Mitchell has been offered toys, a laptop computer, and other items. Someone from Wilmington even started an mass email campaign (I received it yesterday).

I heard there was interest from Oprah's camp, but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Here's to the power of music. And musicians!

Mike
