Members RupertB
1 old bed sheet1 roll of duct tapespray paint in as many colors as you want.Duct tape your bands name to the sheet. Everybody get a can of spray paint and go to town until its covered. Rip off the duct tape. Yeah yeah, I know its cheezy but its better than your plasic "Fast Signs" banner or a brick wall. Members Guitar Guru
I totally disagree that a banner is tacky for any band. If you are really wanting to push your original music and get your band name out there, then this is the best way to keep your name in front of the crowd at all times. We have a few banners of different sizes, depending on the venue. The bass drum is covered, as well as having covers for our amps if need be.....they all have the band name on it.I know it should be about the "strength of the music" but reality is that nobody is going to retain anything about your music if they don't have a name to associate to it. You have to shove your name down their throats until they get the drift. Here's our big banner from our CD Release party......ignore the microphone in my eye. Here's the same banner in our jam spot......a little bit clearer. Actually it was free......my drummer works for a graphics company......he was testing out the fabric his company ordered......and he kept the test one he did....hence our banner.Normally though, that thing would be several hundred dollars, I would assume. Members GZsound
We have a banner that I had custom sized to fit my "A" frame keyboard stand. When we can, we hang it up behind us, but when we can't, like at festival gigs, I hang in on my Keyboard stand. We also have the band name on the front drum head. I firmly believe you cannot have too much promo showing. One gig generated by someone remembering our band name pays for the banner.

Members HuskerDude
I'm definitely of the "Dear god, that's tacky" camp. It's mostly due to the fact that 99% of bands that I've seen with a banner onstage behind them have been awful. Either wedding bands cranking out "Brown Sugar" the 19 trillionth time or just bad, bad original bands. That's not to say that any band with a banner will be bad, just my experience. There's certainly nothing wrong with promotion, either. Get a bass drum logo made up, set up a litte merch area. Even if it's just stickers and pins, as long as it has the name on it, it's promotion. And definitely HAVE A MAILING LIST THERE. Email or snail mail if you book that far in advance. I personally hang a California flag from my keyboard stand, so I'm not averse to stuff hanging on a stage, either.
Members srsfallriver
I think a banner or something similar isn't tacky in it's own right but may be tacky depending on where you're playing. My band will use a banner at a club or outdoor public gig. But we mostly do weddings and will never put one up at one of those. My guitarist picked up some wierd effect lights to try out once. They projected a moving kind of swirly pattern (sort of like Metallica's Load cover) but the real cool thing was that you could put a slide in it. He made a slide of the band name and website that showed in the swirls. Unfortunately, we do so few clubs now that we almost never use it.

Our bass player is an artist, and I do a lot of film and photography so we're getting together some film and slide projections to project behind us onstage. It's time-consuming but not that expensive to do, and fun if you're into that sort of thing.
Members MrDOS
Tacky? Sounds unnecessarily negative. Like others have mentioned, promotion is a good thing. We got a 72" wide sign from Nimon signs for under $100, delivered.James NimonNimon Signs & Embroidery, Inc.(719) 391-3734 Fax: (719) 391-3807Online www.nimonsigns.com

I don't mind them, as long as it's not a {censored}ty one. I've seen ones that look like the ones mainly favoured by smalltown used car dealers, and they are definitely tacky. But I agree with the promotional angle. I can't count the number of times I've seen a really good band but had no idea what they were called. The bass drum thing is an okay compromise, but a lot of bands here share gear (the curse of living in a city where hardly anyone drives) so it could get confusing if you've borrowed the other band's drumkit. Members unichord
Thanks for all the replies.I just ordered one. Photoprinted on plastic, grommets with a pipe channel on top.I got 6 ft wide, 3 ft high....I hope thats big enough. My reasoning for the 6 ft is that I can use a standard 8 ft pipe with it - and it will fit within the confines of an 8 foot lighting truss.Spent a little over $200 for it locally. Should arrive next week.
