Members Sordid1
being in bands is the best part of my life excluding my family of course. There is no experience on the planet quite like getting on stage and kicking ass with a great band. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Members hankypanky
I hadn't been in a band for over 10 years until recently. I think everybody feels about the same - afraid of walking into a jam session and being perceived as a bad musician. I'm seriously not an amazing musician I've tried out with a few bands and had offers with all except one. What I discovered is that the fit between you and the other band members is more important than your musical ability.
Members flip333
Yea, isn't that the truth! You must have a good fit: 1) musical ability must be similar or the more talented member gets disgusted 2) musical taste must be similar. Imagine a country cowboy doing a duet with boy george. 3) Personalities must harmonize. You can have different personality types, but they must have some points of complement. Two or more headstrong alpha types will eventually duke it out. Even if you are a mediocre musician, a good fit with others will draw the best out of you. Lesson: Find an environment you can grow in. If it does not smell good to you, then its really not for you. Always put on your best show..... don't act like Marvin Milktoast apologizing for your performance ....just keep your mouth shut. Your performances will continue to improve forever if you keep believing they will. flip
Members Base
I wasn't sure I wanted to play in front of anyone, but I wanted to play with other people. Try what I did and place and ad somewhere stating your level and that you just want some people to jam with (actually, I found an ad asking the same thing as I went to post mine, but same result). You may find you do want to play out after all and if not, that's cool, at least you'll know...

MrKnobs/Terry your posts offer that balance of "Tragic Comedy vs. Real World" knowledge! Back to the original topic...as a soundman I've enjoyed working closely with some bands and IMO many are just like families...(Feel free to insert your own jokes here!) Nevertheless, without being in a band people will never know what might be possible. I'll "sample" an old quote: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Members jim e. grappler
Go for it, analog daniel! It will be well worth it. I regret that I am in my thirties and just played my first gig. The advice here has been so great, it has inspired me even more. All the fears that were listed are so true but you can only overcome them if you face them down and believe in your own talents. Good luck!

Members doubleR
{censored}fire, if I can be in a band, ANYONE can. I was 48 years old when I joined my first band (I'm 48 now). My story is that I played guitar for a few years in high school--never very seriously--then gave it up. Didn't touch a guitar for almost 15 years. Then, when my son was born in 2000, I started playing again, because I wanted him to get interested in music at an early age. A funny thing then happened--very quickly, all the stuff I had learned many years earlier quickly came back to me. I took a refresher guitar course at a local community college, and before long I began to get the itch to jam with other musicians. The problem was that most guys my age never quit playing like I did, and either used to be pros, were pros, or could be pros. So, in the ads I would place I would be real honest about my skills. I would explain the 15-year gap in my playing, that I can't play complex, fast solos like Zeppelin, Black Sabbath Van Halen etc., but I do work really hard and I practice regularly. Eventually I found a great group of guys that I play with now. They're all about my age, with similar musical tastes. The other guitarist is amazingly talented (he can also play bass and sing lead). He's the kind of guitarist who can listen to anything once and duplicate it. He handles most of the leads, and I play mostly rhythm and occasional solos and fills. He's also great at arrangements, and I've learned alot from him. So....my advice is it's OK to be nervous and intimidated when going on auditions (Lord knows I was) but keep trying. You'll find the right fit for you.

You'll find your playing will start improving fast in a band setting. I've always maintained that 1 hr on stage (even if there's nobody there) is worth 3 hours of practice on your couch. Members srsfallriver
Dude, Go for it! What have you got to lose anyway? If you suck then you'll learn why you sucked and do better next time. I was asked to join a band a week after I got my first bass. I didn't even know how to tune it! That band fell apart and I later got kicked out of another band a week prior to our first gig because I sucked. I learned from those days and I now play every weekend for one of the areas top paying bands! Just do it. Keep a smile on your face, pay attention and learn! Don't worry about failing - in fact you ought to worry more if you don't fail.
