How do I come up with a good band name?

Yeah coming up with a name is tough. For a cover band it's usually a good idea to tie in a word that somewhat describes what you do. That way you have instant marketing with just your name.

Thats a cool idea. What about something like Virtuosity?

Are there any bands out there that have more than one name? I'm having trouble coming up with one name that suits both function and club work...

Thanks,

Brew

BTW Lee, do you live anywhere near the big chicken? I visited Atlanta about 5 years ago and loved it :)

That sounds like a good name for a prog band maybe! What kinds of covers do you play?

Definitely! Lots of bands who play different types of material at different types of events have various "alter egos" where they change the name, look, instrumentation etc. even if it's the same individuals or mostly the same.

Cool! I don't live very close to the Big Chicken, no... it's on the northwest side of town and I'm on the northeast side. It's been awhile since I've been to London too, but I hope to be back there touring someday!

Some other suggestions:

Choose a name that is easy to remember.

Make sure it has no alternate spellings - in the age of internet marketing your clients should be able to locate your website quickly and easily.

Check whois for the availability of the domain. It's best to have a .com (.net, .org etc are ok in a pinch but MOST folks will enter the .com by force of habit)

....and the name should somehow relate to your musical style.

Don't rush into it....you'll spend alot of time and money getting the name out.....don't want to start over down the road.

Pick a name that is short enough there will always be enough letters for the club to get it on their marquee..

Pick a name that is meaningless regarding your type of music. That way you can play anything you want and get booked at different venues.

Think about future embarrassment. I made the horrible mistake at the ripe old age of 16 to allow our manager to change the name of my band to the Jackasses.

Forty years later it still haunts me......

We'll be covering stuff from TOTO, Steely Dan, Robbie Williams, Crusaders to good old rock and roll.... depending on the audience and venue.

I think we'll be going down the multiple band name route. Its sounds far easier to have seperate names for different styles of music.

I'd love to hear you play live Lee. Any plans for coming over this year?

a) blow me, 'cause i play other people's songs and you think that i'm actually the band that wrote them and yer gonna yell "freebird" at every opportunity.

b) wankasourus

c) ghastly simpson

d) cantthinkofmyowntunes

e) mustang sally ride sally ride captain riders on the stormy mondays always get me downed out of my heading for a heartbreak hotel californication breakdown go ahead and give it to me....

You're one of those who stands by the bar with his arms crossed telling your buddy "I can play that solo better than that", aren't you?

Years ago an old band of mine was reviewed in a trade magazine. It was a big deal for us. The review ultimately boiled down to "very interesting. shame about the name". :D

Chose wisely.

Hunt around for ideas. Look at phrases from lyrics in the songs you cover. Maybe there's a reference from some poem that sums up what you do. Have everyone in the band come up with 5-8 name ideas and bring them all in for discussion.

Round the Belfast scene, some bands used to have two names - one for covers gigs to keep them in money, and one for themselves when they got an originals gig. Not a bad idea, really.... They were open about doing it often, which had the advantage that many folks who liked them at one would seek them out to see them doing the other (mostly covers gigs -> originals gigs). The difference in name meant that everyone knew exactly what they were getting in to see - covers or originals gig.

There was a great covers band there too that used to go by the name "The Supreme Pontiffs". :D

Another cool band name i heard was Shatner. I always think it's cool when the name means something - like a reference to a favourite song, movie quote, actor, whatever.
