Looking to start a band in Los Angeles

I'm going to start school in LA in about 2 weeks and was looking to start a band. I want to start a Fusion Metal band that encompasses thrash, death metal, and eighties metal with Jazz harmony, melody, etc. I'm thinking something like Cynic or Atheist with clean vocals and slightly more jazz.

If you all aren't interested in that, I'm looking to form a cover band to make some money and have fun.

Please respond if you live in LA.

I've been playing guitar for 9 years. I'm looking for people with experience.

I am 18.

Post it on the Recycler - www.recycler.com - make sure it goes in the Los Angeles edition. Many famous Los Angeles bands got formed that way (from the print edition) like the Go-Gos, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc...

You could also post this in the musician classified here on HC. It uses zipcode and distance as a search parameter. Also Craigslist.

Depending on where you are going to be in L.A., be warned that this is a very spread out town, and, for instance I live 16 miles from my drummer, and 23 miles from my keyboardist. I hope you have an economical car.

I would suggest waiting until you get to where you are going, and see who's in the 'hood.

What school? UCLA? CSULA? CSUN?

Bestid!

Share the wealth, dammit!!!;)

I think I'll just try to find players at UCLA, or I'll go hang around at the Musicians institute; they all like shred.

Feh. In my experience, the majority of musicians at MI suck, but the few that are good are really, really, REALLY good.

The problem with the school is that a lot of people go there without much talent and experience (the big rock & roll dream, right?) and learn to be, at best, very mediocre musicians. So the few very talented people go there and their already great ability is kicked up a few notches.

Well, depending on what your major is, I hate to say this, but you may have a hard time finding time to devote to a band situation. UCLA is not a 'party school'. If you are coming from out of state, you will need to maintain a good GPA in order to stay...

On the other hand, there are plenty of venues in LA to go check out music, when you do have the time....but if you are under 21, which I am guessing you are, that could be a problem :(

Awesome major. I'm sure you'll find it really rewarding.

L.A. is my home town but I haven't lived there in quite awhile now so... fraid I can't help you with the band thing. But if you don't have luck finding folks through this forum, I'd suggest Craigslist.org, and the Recycler which is a free classifieds rag. Also Music Connection, if it still exists, has good musician classifieds. Hanging out in music stores and clubs is always a good way to meet musicians of course.

Be sure to check out Rhino Records too... it's very close to the UCLA campus and it's a killer store. Good luck!
