Hey men,

I would appreciate knowing what amp/speakers/effects you're currently using. And, if you have the time, a little review of your setup (likes, dislikes etc).

I need to update in this department and would find a working musicians input of great value.

TIA

George

We play classic rock, funk and blues, about a third each.

Mainly I use my Strat with Fralins, but have an SG tuned for playing slide. My pedal board is minimal...Boss compressor, Boss Turbo Overdrive and Guyatone Micro Delay.

Amp is a Peavey Classic 50 with 4-10's. I use the amp's overdrive for most leads, and use the Turbo Overdrive for a bluesy grit tone and slight volume boost.

I like the simplicity of my setup. I use the volume control on the guitar a LOT to go from slightly clean to total crunch.

I really like the projection of an open back 4/10 amp, especially for a 3-piece band. It really fills the stage with sound.

Nothing I dislike about my setup, except lugging the 63-pound amp. I've been playing over 30 years and am quite satisfied with my tone. The Fralin pickups are awesome and sound great thru the mid-laden 4x10 Classic amp. Clean sounds are warm and sweet, the overdrive tones are excellent, very rich and full sounding.

i like to keep it as simple as possible, fender hotrod deluxe, strat with carvin rails, i use the amps distortion mostly, but i do have a digitech rp 80 that i use for phase and delay. I really bought the rp 80 to use at home but i liked some of the presets so it ended up going to the practice room for a test run and we all liked it. The draw back is that it's not very user friendly, meaning that you have to scroll thru patches rather then changing to patches but what do you expect from an 80 dollar multi effect unit. i backup with a fender delux 90 and another strat that is pretty much standard (I add extra springs to the trems on all my strats and add sprizell locking tuners to tune stabilize, for all you strat guys out there this works great!!). like i said basic is what i go for. If the rp unit dies for whatever reason ill just pull it out of the loop and keep playing i can get by without the doo dahs . I know that there are plenty of guys out there with much nicer rigs but this seems to work well for me and like momma always said if it aint broke dont fix it.

Amp:

Randall RM4 w/ Vox, Plexi, Recto and SL modules

Randall RT2/50 power amp

FX:

Rocktron Multivalve

Cab:

Marshall 1965A 4x10

Guitar:

Wolfgang Flame Top Special

EBMM Axis

Tokai T2 Sound Stream

Set up is flexible as I can swap out modules in the preamp if necessary. I love the sound of 410 cabs and it weighs a lot less than a 4x12.

Playing rock, classic rock and pop punk covers.

I play Classic rock and blues from 50's to 80's (a couple after that too):

Guitar: Parker Fly Classic with RMC 13 pin mod

Amp: H&K zenTera combo w/zboard

Mackie SRM450 with Beringher mixer

efx?: Roland VG8ex

synth: Roland GR33

There are more tones in this setup than have been recorded in 50 years. I have a blast finding them.

Btw, no problem cutting through the mix anywhere with anyone I play with. Nothing but compliments on the tone (many from "tubees")

And it all fits in my station wagon.

G&L legacy

into

boss tu2

keeley modded blues driver

sansamp gt2

catalin bread SPP

into

marshall avt275

direct out to the desk...

sounds great. covers everything from elvis, dobie gray and the monkeys to the clash to bryan adams to the libertines

i usually run all 3 pedals at the same time and just work the volume knob and pickup selector. i'll probably stick my chorus on the end for cleans but i love this set up even though it's really basic it does cover a whole lot of ground and has the added bonus of making everything rock just a little bit more.

Just downsized in the amp department, now that we have a big enough PA to mic everything. Using a modded Carvin Nomad (Princeton as a backup) with:

MM Axis

Parker PM-20

Agile PRS copy w/GK3

Taylor T-5

Roland GR20

Boss Pedals: CS3, CE2, CE5, DD5, PS5, Wah (yes, 2 chorus pedals)

We're a 2-guitar band with keys and sax, and the T5 really cuts through to add realastic acoustic to a hard rock mix.

Sometimes, I fatten the horn lines with the GR20.

Mostly, I play lead and the solos on the MM.

Since I abso-{censored}ingly suck on slide, the other guitar player does all of those solos, whicih is good because I'm carrying enough {censored} to the gig already. A quality powered pedal board is a must for cover band gigs.

Okay here's my setup:

PRS CE24 w/HFS/Vintage bass

Les Paul Studio w/Duncan Custom/SethLover neck

FENDER Strat w/Texas specs/Carvin TBH bridge

into: TU-2 tuner>octavia>Chicken salad vibrato>ZOOM Powerdrive PD-01>Crybaby Classic>Zoom Hyperlead HL-01>

input of TRAYNOR YCV40

GE-7 EQ>DIGIDELAY in loop

Laney 2X12 w/Eminence and Vintage 30.extension Cab

I can go from pristene cleen,Pushed/Blues(w/PD-01),HardRock/Metal(w/Hyperlead) Classic rock/crunch on channel 2(pushed with PD-01)

4 all usable tones

We play modern rock so their all used!!!

I'm upgrading to a bigger amp soon maybe the JSX combo

But I'll prolly use the same pedalboard.the Zoom Analog pedals are really great

As for FX, I'll add a Tremolo pedal soon and I'm jonsin for an EVH Phase 90

Tradition Jerry Reid Pro/Ibanex RX170 through a Digitech RP300A through a Music Man 75 watt out of a single 12" EV open backed cabinet. I love it but watch the quality on those Traditions, I got a lemon, but a great sounding lemon at that. The digitech pedal is ok and I use very few available options as the modified clean setting gives you a great tone and breaks up a bit at higher volumes. I love the Music Man and I've owned it since it was new, I just wish I had waited and gotten the 1 X 12 EV model instead of the floor model with 2 X 10 MM speakers. Now I play the amp solely through a 12' EV cabinet and it kicks ass.

Usually three or four guitars onstage...(most often three)

Am Std. Strat, stock

Gibson Les Paul Std. or Washburn A-20. Les Paul has Seymours in it.

Ric 360-12.

Guild DCE1 acoustic w/Fishman.

Acoustic goes straight into the board. On solo gigs, I'll have an Alvarez Jumbo 12 string with a Seymour Woody run through a JoeMeek into the board. I don't usually use the 12 on band gigs...and I only usually take 1 electric (if any) on solo gigs.

Electrics go through a little pedal board with an Ibanez SoundTank Tube Screamer, a Danelectro Chorus, and a Boss Tremolo. Output into a Marshall TSL-122.

Hey men,

Mighty kind of ya. I learn a little from each of your posts.

As all you working musicians know, what works/sounds good in the bedroom often does not sound so good in real working conditions.

Thanks again. Most appreciated.

Right now I am using two guitars: an Anderson Hollow Cobra and an Ibanez RG1820X (with Piezo trem for acoustic tones).

There are two signal paths, one for electric tones and one for acoustic). For the acoustic stuff the piezo output is run into a Fishman Aura then direct to the pa.

The electric is: VHT Valvulator--Buddah wah--EVH Phase 90--Sd-1--Digi Whammy--ADA Flanger-- (pedals in the amps FX loop are: Boss CE2, DD3 and Voodoo labs tremolo).

My amp is a Wizard head and 4-12 cab loaded w GB's...

works for me.....

danceable rock covers from the 70's thru modern:

Marshall TSL100 head into a 1960A (4x12) cabinet

all effects are via a G Major in the loop

all swithing is via Ground Control midi pedal.

guitars are a Wolfgang and a LP copy. Sometimes a tele too...

Likes: sounds good, cuts through well. Versatile, can get many different tones and the effects are great. Looks "rock"

dislikes: heavy, bulky. Consumes precious space on tiny stages. Amp can be too bright.

Usually a G&L guitar, either a Legacy Special or Bluesboy. I have an ES-335 and Flying V too, but I use the G&Ls more. Crate V3112 amp with Tone Tubby speaker. Samson Airline Wireless, Boss TU-2 tuner, Vox V848 wah, Bad Monkey OD, Nick Nitro Fuzz, Univibe, H2O chorus and delay. I could get by without the Nick Nitro. Wouldn't change anything else.

very true. what i usually do to dial in gear is get the band to start playing and then fiddle about for a few minutes setting it till it sounds great. alot of the time you'll find when the band stop and you're playing alone it sounds horrible but it fits perfectly in the band situation.

My Guitar:

Ernie Ball / Musicman John Petrucci Signature seven string with piezo

Ibanez RG 570 (backup)

Ibanez AJ307 on Gracie Stand (if necessary)

My Rack:

Carvin AC 120 Power Conditioner

Mesa Boogie Triaxis Preamp

TC Electronic G Major

Mesa Boogie 2:90 Poweramp

Assorted:

Whirlwind DI box for piezo line

Samson Airline Wireless for both Magnetic & Piezo

Dunlop Crybaby Classic

I'm a firm believer that when it comes to cover bands, they shouldn't sound like a jukebox playing the songs exact tones and note for note. I do cover a huge variety of songs though so I use a lot of presets and tones to do it.

For example, when I'm playing "Cocaine" by Clapton I'm not trying to nail his tone exactly but I'll use a bluesy, slightly broken up tone.
