What a humiliating and fun time!

I was asked to sit in with my old drummer's new band. We played 3 hour long sets and I knew about three of the tunes. I did pretty well. I hadn't gigged in about three years, but I've been playing and my ear has improved. I totally lamed out on three or four songs (couldn't hear what was going on, so I dumped my volume knob and air guitar-ed like I meant it. The crowd didn't catch on...hell I don't think the band even noticed).

The soundman was a jackass. I have total respect for sound people, and when he told me to turn down I did. I dumped my volume without questioning him. That doesn't change the fact that he is a jackass.

Ask me to turn down and I will. Tell me to turn down, and I will (but I won't respect you as much). Let me go through two sets without saying a word and then come up to me after the first song of the third set and say "You're way too {censored}ing loud, and you need to come way down", and I call you a jackass. If I was so overpowering, why in hell would you wait until the third set to tell me?!? And why would you curse at me in the process?? It's not like I'm unapproachable. I'm a fat friendly {censored}er! I'm jolly dammit!

He also didn't seem to know much about his own equipment, but enough bitching...

I had a great time. I didn't like the tunes we were playing. I like funk and this is a classic rock cover band. It was great to step out and be aggressive though. I got to take a bunch of solos, and watching the drunks dance from on stage...well, I'd forgotten how much fun that is. We were playing a dive bar with Vermont rednecks getting liquored up. They ate up the classic rock with a spoon!

One audience member, a rather soused, good looking, dancer girl demanded Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo. The guitarist said that we don't know it and she says "Sure you do...PLAY IT!" I burst out laughing. They went into Keep on Rocking in the Free World (dedicated to "Everyone in Iraq")...did I mention how glad I was that no one I knew was in the audience? Well Neal Young soothed this savage drunk. Everyone had a good time, and no one got hurt.

They want me to replace their current guitar player, but I don't think I will. He drives 4 hours to play the gigs every other week, but doesn't travel through the Vermont winters. As good a time as I had, I couldn't be in the band without making a lot of changes to the setlist. They are happy with what they're playing, and I don't have the time to try to be a band leader. They'd also need me to sing on about half the tunes, and although my singing is better than it ever was, I'm not up to fronting a band like this.

I do hope to sit in again. The crowd seemed to like me, and so did the band, so we'll see what happens. I could be up in front of a whole different crowd of drunks in a week or three!
