Train Wreck . . .

What jazz great Charles Mingus used to do is throw in some last minute changes to charge everyone up and keep things fresh. If you practice too much it seems like the blank-out occurs more easily. I usually go through the stuff once earlier in the day and then go do something else, like it's just another day without a gig. I play jazz, though, so a train wreck describes every jazz song.

True.... I got to meet Mingus during a club date in Boston. I noticed he handed out charts to everyone before the set, so I asked if I could see them. The piano chart had a 12 bar head and then a bazillion bar rest line that just said "BLOW!"

I've forgotten lyrics to songs I've performed thousands of times, both cover and original. I've written songs that, for some reason, I simply blank on the lyrics to and have to have a cheat sheet taped to my monitor every night. I've put the third verse in where the second verse goes and then told the band to "ride that D" while I made fun of myself to the audience over what I just did. And with all this, the only thing I refuse to do is have a music stand on stage - nothing disgusts me more than that.

I always comfort myself with the knowledge that if anyone in the audience could do better they probably would be, and {censored}, if you can't laugh at yourself there will always be someone there to pick up the slack.

It happens all the time. I can't imagine remembering all those words. Our front man has a cheat sheet with the first few words of each song listed. Looks like a set list. It's funny to see people come up to look at the set list on the front monitor and see "When the jacks..." or "I took a walk around the world..." and get a puzzled look on their faces.

I've found myself lost in a difficult C G Am progression more than once. When it happens I don't even react. "I meant to do that!"

Just remember that alcohol is your friend. Not you drinking it, but the audience. I'm convinced that the average drinking listener doesn't have the same ear as a musician who hears everything.

I saw a coworkers band last month and they were bad. Real bad. Don't get me wrong, I ain't the world's greatest player either. And I'm not one of those super-critical asshole musicians that listen for mistakes. I go out to have a good time - not do band reviews.

But when the singer is off key on 9 out of 10 songs, and the "harmonies" are in entirely different keys (that haven't even been invented yet) - well that sort of sticks out like an untuned guitar. At least I thought.

Yet they had people out on the dance floor the entire night. Getting applause after every song. At first I thought it was a meeting of the local chapter of the tone deaf society or something. But then it dawned on me - they weren't hearing the same things that I was.

But when they did an accapella version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight (?) in excruciating three part disharmony I had to go. Nails on a chalkboard.
