sounds to me like your looking for some good old fashioned "cock rock". Sorry to tell you that style of music is about as out of fashion as Zoot Suits and berets.

I'm sure there are some currrent bands out there still playing guitars 80's style, but I haven't heard 'em

All these genres/compartments/boxes everyone wants to put {censored} in makes it hard to keep track of....

Tell me if I got this right:

Cock Rock = 70's hard rock

Butt Rock = 80's hair metal

Is that right?

Also, I'd have to say (aside from their campy glam vocal antics) that The Darkness fits the description fairly well. They have great hook-driven guitar tunes.

Heard some good stuff here.. Buckethead and dream theater are pretty cool..

If your worried about style then just keep following everyone like who do, and when something becomes popluar you can pretend to like it again, since everyone else does... Your probably a red socks fan, now huh? (no offense to real fans from boston)

Can stand the darkness.. Way too cheeseball...

Im really looking for any bands that actually play there instruments.. and play them well.. while there's a place for 3 chord songs, and over produced synthetic sampled music, there's also 1000s of bands that do it.. Just seems like the days of real musicians has kinda past, and itll come back again.. and b money will be at the back of the line waiting to ge it to watch.... :)

Cheers..

cant find some of the music above.. Im using napster as my music source..

Keep suggestions coming..

i think you misunderstood my post. I am a big fan of guitar based rock music, I miss it terribly. I wish it were still in fashion, but sadly, it is not and hasn't been for a long time now.

You might want to check out a band called "Silvertide", they sound like a blend of Black Crowes and AC/DC (sort of). Velvet Revolver has some good stuff going on too. Big Wreck was a incredible band from a few years ago that had some great guitar playing.

Of course, don't miss the new King's X CD coming out later this month. That's essential and goes without saying.

And then there is MY band, BACON LIPS. If your ever in the tri-county area, look us up!

Steve Morse is good.

Testament, Megadeth, Pantera (you probably already listen to them).

All swedish metal from the early nineties.

Eric Johnson is very good if he's not singing.

Nevermore has two incredible guitar players in Jeff Loomis and Steve Smyth.

You should check out these bands if you haven't heard them; they have tremendous guitar players.

Cool.. I know it hasn't but, I think it really could make a come back.. It'd need to be different.. but there's definitely room for a good harder edge rock (not super thrash like what ozzfest has become) (not current day pop/metal), but something with some soul and a harder edge with some good guitar shred.. LOL!

Anyhow... Ill check some of those bands out..

Have you listened to Bruce Dickinson's past few solo albums, or Halford? Painmuseum? Just shooting some ideas out there if you like the "traditional" metal style with less cheese. Soilwork is one of the Swedish bands that has drifted away from the death metal sound quite a bit, for better or for worse, dropping the growled vocals for the most part. Definitely some good guitar chops to be found there.

Jimmy Herring

Shane Theriot

Robben Ford

Greg Koch

Danko Jones

Drive-By Truckers

Gov't Mule

Los Lobos

The Black Keys

Sonny Landreth

Jim Campilongo

Richard Thompson

Grady

Most of these bands are on the bluesy side of rock.

That might not be what your looking for.:p

The Darkness kick ass, and I have no shame in saying that. I think part of the point is that it's OTT and that the band doesn't take themselves very seriously, but the guitar work and songwriting is superb. Always fun to bust out some of their stuff when jamming at home or with the band. :)

Some of my favorites now are Dream Theater, Alter Bridge, Steve Vai, Porcupine Tree, and Marillion, though Marillion and Porcupine Tree are mellower stuff.

Deep Purple, Michael Schenker, Cinderella, Lynyrd Skynyrd and some of those older bands are always good to see when they decide to tour sometimes.

A lot of the newer stuff is just to dark and chaotic for me but I'm a lot older than most people around here so that's to be expected.
