Members No Remorse
Hi, I need some help. My band plays metal, hard rock, classic rock, and blues. We want to play at the school talent show this year, but need a challenging progressive song (that won't bore the audience) to play. We looked into some Dream Theater songs, but the one we like uses seven string guitars, which we don't have. Any suggestions?

Members Windreaper
You didn't exactly tell what kind of piece you would be performing. I assume you want something fast and loud as it seems to be the ticket for your average audience. Pull Me Under +1. It played on MTV in 1992, their first and sort of only real mainstream hit. It's a nice song and not too hard. Take the Time is another great piece from the I&W disc. You might want to start practicing it now since it is quite tricky. Both are rather long at over 8min, though, so make sure you have enough time to perform your piece. Porcupine Tree songs are great but the music is more about the soundscapes than guitar masturbation (ie. not the best for making the audience scream). Try 'Blackest Eyes' from In Absentia, though. Something by Symphony X would also be a great choice, imo. Sea of Lies from the DWoD disc is bit over 4 min and features plenty of great riffs plus masturbation solos. Even better, the song can be pulled off with no backing vocals. The Bird-Serpent War from the V could also work. Plenty of great guitar work and few backing vocals. If you have an especially good vocalist, try out some stuff by Pain of Salvation, 'Inside' being my suggestion. A kick-ass tune that sure as hell won't get boring and it's flashy to play.
Members MacBradley
Oooohhhh, if your singer has good range try pulling off a Mar's Volta song, like Interactic ESP or Roulette Dares. The later has slower jazz like parts that will impress the non-rockers too. I also think Rush would be tight, many songs from them you could do... Members No Remorse
Thanks for all your suggestions, I've got alot of listening to do. I think one of the best things I could do is play a techinical orginal, if we can have one written by then.

Well, personally, I'd recommend playing something you enjoy that you know you can pull off well, than to play something challenging, just for the sake of playing something challenging. I don't know how good, average or bad you guys are, but for a talent show, I think you'd be better served to play something you can execute well, than to play something difficult that you execute marginally. Of course, the only people who can determine what you can execute well is you and your band. Good luck and most of all have fun!
