My daughter and I were out hitting yards sales and flea markets yesterday and at our last one, the lady was having what she called a "Grudge Sale"...seems her husband had run off with another gal and so she was selling everything and moving back to her mother's place in Missouri...one thing that caught my eye was a Shure SM-57 and I inquired about the price, and she said "Are you a musician? Come out to the garage, there's a bunch of gear out there!"...

And so there was! Apparently, "Hubby" had accumulated a lot of choice gear, and she said, "I'd like to get rid of everything today...what'll you give for everything together?" I told her that I couldn't give her a fair price on the lot, because there was too much quality gear there...she said, "I want to get rid of everything and I prefer to sell it cheap, just so I can tell him how cheap I sold it...how much cash have you got on you right now?"...I checked my wallet and told her $135...she said "Sold and I'll help you load it up!" I again told her that this would be about a nickel on the dollar of what it was probably worth, just to be honest, but she just said "Not a problem!"

I finally agreed to take everything and send her 1/2 of the proceeds from what I sell the stuff of I don't keep for myself.

So I now have:

1 MIA Super Strat w/ case

1 Ibanez Jem7V w/ case

1 MIJ Fender Jazz5 bass w/ case

1 Hughes & Kettner BK300 & 2 X 15" cab

1 Fender Bandmaster Reverb & 2 X 12" cab

1 Line6 Pod

1 Ibanez Chorus/Flanger pedal

2 Boss Tu-2s

1 Boss Noise Suppressor

6 Shure SM-58s and cables*

3 Shure SM-57s " "*

2 Shure SM-87s " "*

12 mic stands w/ booms*

1 Mackie Onyx 1620 mixer

Crown XLS 402 power amp

Digitech Vocalist 300*

Big box of assorted cables*

* I'm keeping these!

What I don't sell locally will be on Ebay soon! :D

Sorry I couldn't reply to this right away.

First I had to wait until my wife took a nap, and then I had to gather all my musical possessions and move them to a storage locker I just rented.

Took a while.

Cripes, you just scared the sh*t out of me. :o

Anything on that list is worth more than you paid, total. My friend went to one of those type sales, looking for an extension ladder, and came home with a dead mint '65 Super Reverb w/cover, for $500.00. The lady had already sold the '65 Fender Strat for $150.00. I offered him $1,000 on the spot, and he wouldn't take it.

I guess that lady hasn't been through a divorce before.

All that guy has to do is show proof of purchase for the items, and they become part of the basis for the settlement at their fair market value.

Since she sold them at an intentional loss, the lost money would come out of her share of the community property, at least in Texas.

Then again, she's a chick, so the dude gets it up the pooper regardless.

Revenge is fun, until the waiter brings the check.

Both guitars and the amps are sold, and I gave the bass to a friend who's bass was stolen, and he's had to play a borrowed Hondo II for about a month (and not even one of the better ones, either! ). He is VERY pleased! :)

The mixer and (possibly) the power amp are probably selling tomorrow...if the power amp doesn't sell to the guys who are coming over tomorrow, I'm thinking about hanging on to it.

The Vocalist 300 is just too cool for words...if you're a singer and have never played with one of these, I highly recommend trying one out! :D I'm already thinking about what songs will get what settings...there's even a VERY credible "Alvin and the Chipmonks" sound! ;)

That's pretty close to buying stolen gear. I would never have done that.
:(

Well anyway I hope her husband won't find you...

Must respectfully disagree...the S.O.B. betrayed her love and faith, and left her high and dry...she was selling everything, so as to have a "grubstake" to start her life over with.

If I'd treated my wife in such a callous and cruel manner, I'd, too, deserve whatever she chose to do with my gear...he could've done things in an honorable way.

I don't know... You only heard her side of the story. And while it's very likely that he was a S.O.B., I would not want to judge, and profit from their sorrows in that situation...

Actually, I heard both her and her kids' side of the story...the kids (about 9 and 13, or thereabouts) weren't very impressed with their dad's running off, either...and they're largely why I'm sending 1/2 of the proceeds to Missouri...

Maybe his new sweetie will buy him some new gear...maybe he'll treat her the same way he treated his wife and kids, eventually.

The wheel of Kharma turns.

Sweet Terry, very sweet.

I was at a guitar show several weeks ago, one of the repair shops had a 1960 LP special, it did look nice, but the repair guy showed me before pics. The guys now ex wife smashed the thing in 3 pieces.

You're good man to split the profits with her, enjoy everything you keep in good health.

A friend of mine had a 63' strat. It was in fantastic, almost pristine shape. His dad had bought it brand new and taken extremely good care of it. He and his fiancee got into a nasty fight one night about how much time his band was taking away from time she thought he should be spending with her. She grabbed the guitar off of its stand in their living room and threw i off the balcony- four floors above an asphalt parking lot. it broke into several pieces. He damn near threw her off the balcony too.

Needless to say, she isn't his fiancee anymore. He ended up kicking her out and filing charges against her for criminal destruction of property and she had to pay restitution and got some suspended jail time. I would have loved to see the look on her face when she found out how much that guitar was worth... it was appraised at $11,500.

Wow, Terry!

I personally wouldn't feel guilty as Terry was honest about how little she was accepting for the gear (which was her intention anyway).

I would be wary about the ex-hubby trying to get his stuff back. He may be looking for his stuff on eBay, too, so be careful.

But it would suck to be the guy, though. I would maybe keep the ones harder to replace (as far as their uniqueness) for a while in case the hubby comes looking for them.

I guess if I were that hubby guy, I would accept my loss of Sm58/57s mics, cables, etc., but I'd like to get my '72 Les Paul (for example) back since it's really irreplacable. I would hope the guy who bought my gear so cheap would understand as he still got a great deal even without it.

Dunno. Tough one.

If this story wasn't told by someone who I feel to be trustworthy, I'd think it was just an urban legend.

How come I'm never lucky enough to come across deals like this? I usually try to hit up 2-3 yard sales every weekend and rarely even see any musical stuff.
