Members LiveMusic
Fair for band to withhold from gig pay? How much?
Members RupertB
If you're carting everybody and their gear in your van, then yes... but only if its agreed to up front. Otherwise no. Personally, I'd only do it if it was a significant amount of mileage/cost to me (say +15% of my take for the gig). Last time I worked for a large corp. (6 years ago) the going rate for mileage compensation was about 33 cents a mile. YMMV.
Members cherri
When we carpool a long distance, I'll peel a couple of bux off the guys' pay with their permission. If we have a gig with a bigger payday than usual, I'll peel off a few dollars from each person to cover my manager expenses. We always discuss it and they guys are always cool about it. I should do it more often, because I pay for the posters, printing, web site fees, long distance phone calls, etc. However, the band is our guitarists' only source of income and he's got kids. His wife works, but they've had a stretch of bad luck .... his well went out, his van broke down again, and his power tubes went out this weekend on his amp. Winter is coming and they'll need heat. I don't have the heart to take even ten bucks for gas from him, when his family needs it more than I do.

At $3.00/GL, many gigs fit that.
Members Terry Allan Hall
The way I do it is the expenses for the gig (gas, promotion, whatever else) comes off the top before the remaining $$$ is divvied up. It's a business.
Members srsfallriver
I just write off my miles and make up for the expence at tax-time.
Members GZsound
That's what I do also. If we are going in one or two vehicles and making a trip of over fifty miles, I will take gas money off the top, but normally I just keep track of my mileage and write it off.
