Members brassic
Let's see how many clueless threads I can rack up here. I think I might have bought the wrong Marshall head. Members brassic
Originally posted by Shellpink No, you didn't. I've not paid over the odds then? The head is actually a 1979 model (not '75, as it says in the title). I didn't realise at the time of bidding that there are several different varieties of JMP heads. I'm not usually this clueless. Members Shellpink
If it sounds good and is in working order, the price is ok. How much is a new Marshall in the UK these days?

Members Shellpink
My pleasure. Besides, the new Marshalls try to copy the sound of the old ones and what you have bought, should be the original.
Members brassic
Indeed. Now I need to start saving for the cabinet. My neighbours are going to love me.

Members Fred_Zeppelin
Certainly looks to be in amazing condition although it does seem to be missing one ot the "selector plugs" off the back (sorry dont know what theyre called) Those heads are great though (even though they weigh about a ton !) Members brassic
Now I'm getting excited. It doesn't have reverb or an effects loop, but with me, the more idiot proof it is, the better. The guy is also selling a 2x12 cab but there's no way I can lug both on the train from Nottingham to London - I'm going to have a hard enough time with the head. And I think I'd prefer to get a 4x12 anyway.
Members Brian Krashpad
Originally posted by Shellpink Don't they, already? I would if I were them. But seriously folks, it's a 70's Marshall. If it works, it's all good. I say Ms. Brassic arrives in the Notts station, plugs it in and scares away all the little animals in the forests. I make do with a Sovtek 50W head that those crafty Russkies modeled after the early Marshall mastered amps, so the real deal should be all the better. Effects loops and other niceties are for sissies! BK
Members Edward
I still kinda regret not buying one of those Sovteks back when they were selling in the UK..... for whatever reason, they never took off (despite critical acclaim). Back then i didn't want to go for a single channel amp.... if i had a studio now, I'd want onel ike a shot..... possibly the only amp that i ever might consider wanting as well as my beloved Valvetronix! As to the Marshall..... if it sounds anything like as good as the Marshall models on my big Vox.... ...... Looks like a good price to me - aprticularly given looks in great condition in the photos. I can understand you'd eant to wait for the 4x12"....... though part of me would be tempted to go for two 2x12"s as a kinda fun-size stack.......... BTW, when are Tits of Death palying out in London next? I've never (to my knowledge) seen another forumite play out before, and I'd particularly love to see that Fender in action as well.... A prior owner cut it in half so that now it's a 2x10 combo with 2x10 extension cab. A bit easier to move and fit into a van like that. Also I recently bought a 2x12 extension cab, so I can use at least 3 different configurations: 2x10 combo only, 2x10 combo + 2x10 extension cab, or 2x10 combo + 2x12 extension cab. Actually, in theory I could even set the combo top half on top of a 4x12, for a 2x10+4x12 set-up, but that seems a tad like overkill. Even for me. We're playing at the Spitz on Oct 27th - it part of a night called Wired Women and Gina Birch (The Raincoats) is headlining with Lora Logic. We are also playing in Farringdon on the 24th at a night called Old Gits, which has a cabaret upstairs and DJs playing country and punk afterwards. Although keep in mind that I can't actually play ...I just try to make as much noise as possible whilst being a complete arse . You need to stop now... Haha! Stopping would be quite unrockish and not comport at all with my mean streak! Here's the Super Reverb cut into two cabs (out in the Wall O' Sound at Casa Krashpad): Here's the little 2x12, standing on end with my Sovtek head atop for a "quarter-stack" (another setup, really good for tight stages with less room for amp footprints!): In the background in this one behind me you can see the top half of the Super being played with the 2x12 bottom (the fence was pretty sturdy so I actually angled both of them backwards ever so slightly for a little better dispersion): BK

(actually, nor have most folks - i tend to get drowned out by the sound of Jimi rolling in his grave at what i do to Purple Haze....) I'll have to see how I'm at on the 27th.... The Spitz is just about ten minutes by foot from my lair, so. BK, my boyfriend is looking at your setup suggestions and going "YES!!!" You need to stop now... Speaking as somebody who once had a fiance that said "why don't we sell your guitar and my guitar and just have one good one to share, so we can save space" (eh.... that's not why she's an ex. But if she'd pushed the point..... and it'd have saved me a whole heap a hurt later on, but oh well!), the only thing i have to say to this is NEVER diss having a partner that is supportive of plenty of instrument and amp acquisitions!! I'm loving my Valvetronix 2x12" - first amp I've had with more than one 12" in it.... not daredvplugged in my ext cab (the matching 2x12") yet, tho, not in my flat....... you should hear how cranked that mother can get on the 1watt setting!! My first "real" amp. Saw it from a moving car in a downtown Jax, Florida pawn window circa 1980. Iirc I bought it for $255-250. It was my only gigging amp all through the 80's (back then I was in "party bands" with friends that only very occasionally played clubs) and was even pressed into emergency service as a bass rig for a short stint in the early 90's. The amp sound is so-so. Plenty loud but as an early solid state prone to tinny-ness-- the tone control stays within a smidgen of cranked all the way to bass. Nice surfey spring reverb and tremelo though. The cab, on the other hand, is totally boss. It has an Altec 15" speaker and sounds marvy with a nice tube head driving it. I still use the cab from time to time with my Sovtek or Sunn heads, when stage space is too cramped for a 4x12, or when I just don't feel like lugging a 4x12. If so how do you like it?I had one a few years back that I bought from a pawn shop. It had a nice overdriven sound, but didn't clean up well. Depends on what you want. It has a master volume, but no channel switching ... but that can be a good thing! You can always swap out preamp tubes to help find the sound you're looking for ... FWIW -- If I hadn't already sold it years ago, I probablly wouldn't be using it for live shows ... but it's one one those amps I wish I hadn't sold. I picked it up last week but haven't yet bought a cab for it. Was thinking of getting a 4x12 but I'm concerned about the weight. I'm quite strong for a woman but I live fairly central and don't have a car, so lugging a half stack around in a taxi might not be the easiest thing to do here. I definitely want a dirty sound so I'm not too concerned that it's only one channel. The rehearsal room we use has a JCM 800 (I think that's what it is) and the only settings I use are "Dirty" and occasionally "Goddamn Filthy".
