You know what's funny.... in your former incarnation you guys kicked up Zepplin better than no other band in the area... near tribute level I thought.

... but now you've ditched Zep (or a largely based setlist of Zep, Floyd and guitar based rock) for a setlist of 80's rock, disco and anything people can dance to. A different side of the coin... certain a little more crowd pleasing in our area. We're both music whores for that almighty gig dollar.

Those songs are from an era when "live" music meant live music. Even the under 25's seem to be understanding that when you go to hear a live band you get to hear live music.

What better way to insure that then to request songs from an era of no backing tracks, drum machines, computers/sequencers, etc.

Why would anyone request a well-known modern song since most of it probably happened on a computer?

Most local bands I see are no different than 1972 anyway. Guitar, bass, and drums (singer sometimes). :bor:

What else would I expect them to play? You may as well play the originals from that era, rather than all the retreads from the subsequent 30 years.

My band worked up Skynyrds "On the hunt" in an attempt to get out of playing "Sweet home Alabama" for the millionth time

We only played it once

Nailed it too

I swear I could hear crickets chriping

Dang, 4 out of 5 requests are still for those bands. Every freaking cover band in the world covers LS and LZ. Can't people go one night without hearing Sweet Home Alabama or Stairway to Heaven. I know we're supposed to give people what they want, but I've been playing that stuff for 30 years already. Time to move on.

Yup. The only song Zeppelin ever did was "Stairway", and the only songs Skynyrd ever did were "Sweet Home", "Freebird", and "Gimme Three Steps".

Therein lies the problem.

Not many bands cover Zeppelin, because not too many singers can cover Robert Plant. Heck, I'm not sure Robert Plant can sing like Robert Plant anymore.

Try doing "Living Loving Maid" and "Saturday Night Special" instead of those other two songs.

That's because it's not one most people are familiar with. Play "Saturday Night Special" rather than "Sweet Home". I'd bet your crowd response will be a lot better.

I stared at her in disbelief... we had just finished a mini rock set that started with Bon Jovi and included Guns & Roses, Def Leppard, Faith No More, Van Halen, Metallica, Kid Rock and was finishing with Rage Against The Machine. Country music was clearly not part of our set.

"You mean the country singer???"
I screamed as our singer is whipping the crowd into a frenzy chanting "{censored} You, I Won't Do What You Told Me!!!"

Her:
"Yes"

Me:
"Um.... no. Really no!"

Her" Ohhhh.... ok! .... Well, can you play the theme to Arthur?"

... no lie!

Never forget...repeat after me...

Seriously though, most people think about music about as much as you think about painting your nails, which probably isn't much. It's nice noise that comes from a box on the fridge to most mortals.

Funny thing: Last night, we had a heckler who said after EVERY tune "Play an original". Well, we are a cover band only. Maybe we'll get together a couple originals just in case we get somebody like that again. Then again, he did end up getting kicked out of the bar later on...

You should have cranked out a dirty rock version of an Alan Jackson song (if you know one). Like TAH said, new reworkings of old songs would be a good compromise, not to mention it'd be fun for you if you actually like a song that doesn't otherwise fit into your set. Sometimes people just want to sing along to stuff they know. If they want it note-for-note, they should stay at home and listen to their records/CDs.

On a different note...I'm not one of these people that only listens to the radio - I've got thousands of records and CDs ranging from the mainstream to the obscure in most genres (except maybe classical and opera, I've tried, but just can't get into it). Yet I would absolutely love to hear Led Zeppelin or Skynyrd on a night out because it rarely happens in the places I hang out in. My friends and I have started going to a club where the DJs play Led Zeppelin, Skynyrd, CCR, Deep Purple etc all night - it's a nice antidote to the clubs who are only concerned with playing whatever MTV2 or the NME are hyping this week. I absolutely love it. Sorry.

That being said, if I went to see a cover band, I'd rather hear The Ocean or Bring It On Home instead of Stairway. And if I heard a good version of the Immigrant Song I'd love them forever.

That happend to me once doing a solo gig. I announced the next tune was an original composed by Sting.... didn't help the situation much!

That's weird. In original bands, people always use to tell us to "play songs they know."

I'll take anything from Led Zep or Skynard ....... beats the hell out of friggin ......" Mustang Sally "

If I try out for one more cover band that has that song on the setlist or hear it at a club I'm going to vomit ....... and then proceed to start that .....

Brady Bunch Tribute band .... I can hear it now ..

SHa na na na na na na na na....... na na na na na

when autumn turns to winter and winter turns to spring ....

you got to change .

On a more serious note ... I think those two bands plus a few others ... are just staples of beer drinking ,drug taking .. I'm totally wasted .. lets rip this place apart kind of music ..

So if your in a bar ................................ nuff said !!

Do like we do when you get that request for ''Free Bird''

Get a count from the drumer and all the band shoot the person the bird at the same time.:D After that say there you go ''didn't cost you a thing'' into the mic and laugh uncontrolably. We usally break out some b side Skynard such as That Smell or Down South Jukin to show that we can play some. It's all done in fun and usally get big laughs :thu:

Hell, my band was all born from 1975-1981 and we can't stand that stuff either. People always ask for Skynyrd...so we give some Skynyrd: "Ya'll wanna hear some Synyrd?" ::busts into "That Smell" with solos split between guitar and organ...and the one man guitar dual at the end. I'm the only guitar player in the band, and the keyboardists and I said we'd both quit if the band decided to play "Free Bird", "Sweet Home", "Gimme Three Steps" "Brown Eyed Girl", "Stairway"...we played that enough in our old southern jam band. Unfortunately we conceded "Mustang Sally", though we keep it short and have a kick-ass drum fill in the end. People are drunk and they aren't musicians...we tell them we don't do that song but will do something else by the same band or just have them pick a song of a list we carry around. We've also been told we're wasting our time on rock and should be a country band because our singer has a pretty voice...riiiiiiiight.

I try not to cop an attitude about this subject (in public) any more. Audiences don't care about our angst.

I'm working on politer ways to deflect unwanted requests.

"Gee, we're not a classic rock band, but we'll toss out a couple of CR tunes just for you," Or, "The management won't let us play Mustang Sally." or "We haven't worked that tune up as a band yet, but do you like (tune x)?."

The attitude in my band when we get a request is to simply proceed with the next song on the setlist :)

If they get really annoying, we'll tell them we'll play it later. Then after the show apologize for not having the time to squeeze it in :D

They dig the show anyway, cause although we play a few songs nobody ever requests, we know by experience they'll like it! We do this stuff for a living (well almost), they don't!

I'll second that !!!!!!!

I think I have seen one band do it really well ( Free Bird ) .

They had a monster keyboard player and a slick ass slide player .

I just have heard it so many times played where it sounded so empty ..
