First gig with my new band tonight.

So we have been putting this project (The Love Handles) together for nearly a year now. It took us nearly 5 months to find the right lead guitarist. Man that search was brutal. Auditioned over 20 guys. They would show up not having learned any of the songs we asked them to learn and would say "let's just jam", "you can see my licks" SHEESH. Anyway we have done several paid private functions that have gone well. Tonight however, we play our first nightclub gig. I usually have some nerves before a gig (been fronting and playing rhythym guitar for nearly 25 years) but tonight is different. This project is very near and dear to my heart, and I love playing with all these guys. There also will hopefully be invited booking agents and promoters in the audience as well as our friends and the club regulars. Please God keep all of our nerves steady and don't let anyone touch the dreaded "SUCK BUTTON". That's all I have to say. I have to go throw up now. Peace ! :D

This Just In.........

One of the best gigs I have ever played with any band I have ever been in. We totally rocked the house. They loved us. The dance floor filled with our first number (Wild Night by Van the Man) and it was rarely empty the rest of the night. Not one train wreck story from this gig. Every set went smoothly and we only skipped one song from out list all night. The club owner dave stayed till deep in the third set and he never does that I am told. We will be booked again there soon I am sure. When we started breaking down at 1:30, there were still 25 or 30 people in the bar and all were singing our praises. God I love this {censored}. Here are some pics. (sorry they are grainy) Me in the purple wig and playing the Breedlove acoustic sans make up. Thanks all.

Great to hear it went so well!!! I dig those heavy nerves before a gig... I find that I am pretty much always able to channel that energy and unleash it on stage as my band'd frontman. Then I can't fall asleep until like 6am that night 'cuz I'm so jacked up. Best high you can get IMO.

Keep on Rockin 69!!

BTW.... the band is called the Love Handles. But our lead player painted the name of our last band (a country project) Quarterhorse (I know where is the rest of the horse ??) on his mains and monitors and we need to figure out how to get the damn things off of them.

Maybe paint over them with black paint?

Or get some stickers made that say The Love Handles??

More importantly, glad to hear your gig went well! Sounds like you taking the time to find the right players paid off nicely! Congrats!

Congratulations,

That looks like a good time!

It looks like you use the JBL 212 speakers in your PA for vocals only with a powered mixer. Apparently, it was sufficient for your show. If you don't mind, please share what you have for your PA.

I talk to people sometimes who insist such a set up is only good for a coffee house acoustic gig. I routinely see small rock shows like yours do just fine with what you have.

You would probably agree that the talent is what counts.

Thanks e-b-e. The gig did go great and we have 4 more bookings there already now.

We thought about the spray paint but with the white on there now (and the carpet type covering) we figure it won't mask it...... just the opposite. We are thinking now the sticker idea or one of the wives said she could take some black sheets and make covers for them with some elastic in the edges. Kinda like pillow cases for speakers LOL.

thanks flip. The place we were playing that night seats at most 100 to 115 people (and it was packed). So this rig is what we use for those types of gigs. The JBL's and the monitors (except for a Crate powered monitor that I keep in front of me) belong to the lead guitarist. He also has a set of Carvin mains (huge muthas) that we use below the JBL's at larger venues and outdoor gigs. I have a Crate 8 channel here at the house that we use for rehearsal, but his JBL's sound so much better. As far as the board goes, we use 2 for larger gigs and 1 for the small venues. Both are 8 channel Mackies (I don't know the model #'s ). We run the mic'd amps, keys and drums (3 for git's and bass....1 for keys.........leaving 4 for the drums) thru one board and the vocals / monitors thru the other. Works great, can run it easily from the stage, it's light, and as we have gotten older we find that lighter is better. LOL.The aformentioned lead player even went out and got a Blues junior and stopped hauling his heavy ass Tweed Peavey Classic 50 around. I leave my Gibson Goldtone at home to.

Bottom line is...with stage volume for our instruments coupled with a good ear for mixing that volume (from many years of playing live) we can get by in most venues of 75 to 250 patrons with a small rig that takes less than 30 minutes to set up and tear down. I have an Explorer and I can get the whole pa, my axes and 2 amps plus other stuff in it for a gig. Bigger isn't always better. Oh and one last note the club owner that night (stuck around all night too he did... lol) told us how refreshing it was for him to hear a band that played great dance songs, with flair and talent, and at a volume that allowed most of the crowd to chat while we played with out having to yell. We believe that a band should always be asked to turn up....not turn down !!!!!!

I didn't realize they were speakers with rat fur, yeah black paint or a sticker prolly wouldn't be the best. I'd get a couple black sharpies and go to town on 'em, it might at least make it less noticeable. If it's a real big deal to get rid of the old band name, you could always just buy new rat fur and recover 'em, prolly wouldn't be too expensive. I'm sure it could confuse the crowd having the old band name displayed, especially after a few drinks!

Good deal that ya got rebooked :)

How did you get The Captain away from Toni Tennille. Did you do "Do That to Me One More Time" or "Love will Keep us Together"? I used to like singing "Muskrat Love". Seriously, though, glad to see things are working out for you. I'm in a similar predicament that you will see in a separate post.

edited to add: You should eat more fiber, you wouldn't have to push so hard. :thu:

Actually he is supposed to be Thurston Howell the 3rd from Gilligan's Island. A common mistake to think he is Darrel Dragon....."The Captain"
