Harmony singer: vibrato problem

I sing lead. For harmony parts, I don't like it as his voice has helluva warble. Just ask if he'll "Turn it off" or what? Great musician, nice guy. We're working up an act. Country, bluegrass, classic rock. (I sing w/o much vibrato.)

Ever seen this problem?

Sounds like he's classically trained. Find a nice way to tell him its not opera.

:thu: yep it took us about a month of practices to convince our female singer not to us vibrato so much we were just very subtle (we are talking about a female here) and kept reminding her that we are a rock act, she got it and now she's even trying some JJ

Just bring it up, bite the bullet, deal with it early and be done with it. This is just one of a million little things that you guys will have to discuss at some point. The more you "practice" dealing with touchy stuff, the easier it gets.

You have a reasonable concern, just don't personalize the discussion. It's not about his ability to sing, it's about a specific vocal affect. Maybe there's a compromise, maybe not, but not dealing with stuff like that can make you miserable.
