Covers setlist?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to put a setlist together for my new covers band and I was after some general advice. We play rock covers, and consist of female singer [strong voice], 2 guitars, bass drums. We stick to standard tunings. We are trying to play songs people will know, but not overplayed [like Mustang Sally etc]. So we're basically doing everything from Since You've Been Gone by Rainbow via Teenage Kicks, Nothing Else Matters, One Last Breath by Creed. We're also gonna do a couple of traditional songs [All Around My Hat & Over The Hills And Faraway] and a couple of songs by The Cult (since they are a local band).

Do you have general advice about how to pace the set (currently 21-22 songs) and which types of songs not to put next to each other? I have never been in a band that played covers exclusively before. Thanks.

Here is what we are doing:

Set 1 - older stuff/classic rock. Reason: Still happy hour crowd, most likely not going to dance and want to hear what they know. For us this includes, The Clash, STP, The Cars, Ramones.

Set 2 - up beat dance stuff. Later in the evening, younger crowd and they want to dance.

Set 3 - get heavier. Last set of the night, people are drunk good time to play heavy stuff.

We also group stuff by theme. For instance we do a "sex" set which starts with Stacy's Mom --> Figure You Out --> Scotty Doesn't Know --> She Hates Me

Want to PM me the songlist?

Just for {censored}s and giggles, I can put together a setlist for you. I'm sure you'll hate it but I'd get a kick out of it, especially if you ended up using it.

What's worked for us in not putting a slower tempo song in the middle of the set. When we did, we'd lose the crowd on the dance floor which is not good. It's gotten to the point now that we'll only have 1 or 2 slower tempo songs per set. If you have more than that, then I'd put it in the beginning of the set and build up from there. You can then put 1 slower tempo at the end of the set to kind of signal the end of the set.
