Am I being a dick? Your thoughts, gentle readers.

OK. At the outset, lemme say that the subject of our discussion is a fait accompli; the deed has already been done, and I'm ready to let the chips fall where they may.

That being said, here's the scoop.

Next Thursday my main (punk rock and roll) band is making our re-debut (for the umpteenth time in our almost decade-long existence) with a new line-up. An H-C forumite from a couple hours north, who I've corresponded with for some time about just such a thing, is coming to our town to share the bill, so I'm doubly excited about the show. His is a new-school punk band.

But here's the rub. The house, unbeknownst to us, has paired us with 2 bands whose fans will very probably hate us just as sure as our friends/fans will hate them (we've been told as much by our friends; my rhythm guitarist actively hates one of the two bands and could very well get in a punch-up with their drummer, with whom I've just learned he's had a prior run-in of some sort).

Being an admitted Situationist and having no problem with making the worst of a bad circumstance (all in good fun of course), albeit before learning of my rhythm guitarist's prior run-in with the other band's drummer, I made up the follwing flyer and sent it in to our local band/scene promo site:

68789106_0fe2b5d131.jpg

Some would consider "frat rock" a derogatory term, but from all objective evidence I've been able to gather, it's applicable here. I suppose the same could be said of "punk rock" or any other label. The co-headliner (if you will, no one actually wants to close) has recently been featured in a piece in an admittedly frat-friendly (to put it mildly) local mag, though in fact they have stated that no one in their band is actually a member of a frat. My take is that the bill itself is a negative, why not play it up as a positive and instill some spirited competition?

I'd rather their fans get all pissed at us and throw {censored}, rather than just walk out when we take the stage. Any reaction is better than none. I figure any band that can't stand up to a little ribbing, or even fan hostility, doesn't need to be standing onstage in the first instance.

So, am I being a dick?

It's OK if you say yes.

BK

PS-- the logos of the two bands used are from their websites. The graphic for the "frat rock" side is taken from a photo of one of those two bands, the graphic for the "punk rock" side is likewise from an actual gig photo of my band

Haha! I like to think, at least, that I have a sense of humor and can take {censored} so long as it's also thrown in good humor. We've actually had more words spoken f*cking with us onstage from other punk and skunk (ska-punk) bands on bills with us than we've ever had from bands of other genres.

Not sure how the other bands will take this, but hell, the odds of us ever playing together again are slim and none anyhow.

No pain, no gain.

Haha, touche'!

Barring unforeseen cicumstance, you will indeed! At present our website has NO photos of the full current membership, and that's just wrong!

;)

Maybe even some action shots offstage if our rhythm guitarist does get in a punch up. Though the kid is so skinny, he becomes invisible if he stands sideways. Maybe he'll be hard to hit.

Krashpad: dude, you better wear a helmet and a flak jacket/bulletproof vest--hopefully, everyone gets the 'joke' and can have a little laugh, but get ready for any animosity, too. Sounds like a 'good time'--let us know how it went down, nevertheless!!!:thu:

If actual {censored} is indeed flung, please don't post those pics....NASTY!

Maybe make a poster that says you'll hate one of these bands, and love the other. And write that each band hates eachother as well.

Make the most of it, hopefully the show will go well and who knows, maybe playing with enemies/rivals will prove to be a good show!

From what I've heard so far, both our fans saw the other half of the bill and are staying home, or going elsewhere. :(

We're on our own. But that's OK.

It could go either way. It depends on whether the other band and their fans see "frat rock" as a derogatory term, or more to the point, that YOU see it as a derogatory term. The flyer itself doesn't look like it's favoring one band over the other - anyone taking offense at it is just being a baby.

Promotionswise, I think you took the best angle possible. If both bands' fans decided to stay away simply because of the other, you need a hook to get them back.

That all being said...

Get ready to RUUUUMBLLLLLLLE!

Haha. my thought is, if they complain about it, I'll do an "amended" flier with "Frat" crossed out and "Good" written in above it, and with "punk" crossed out and "Bad" written in above that.

Dude, sorry to hear "both" your fans will not be there but that's just 2 less fans ? Ha !

This sounds like the old "battle of the bands" situation. I've learned over the years that nobody really likes it ! Most people, young or old, just want to hear good bands play good music. If they wanted to see whiney bastards yelling at each other well,,,,they might as well stay home and listen to their whiney bastard of a spouse : )

Actually, two was an exaggeration. We're a punk band. We have NO fans.

My wife won't even come see us.

You're taking the flyer too literally.

It's just an angle for an advert.

Because of the split bill it can't be sold as either a mainsteam rock show or a punk rock show.

Of course it is!

Man, one of the first punk shows I ever saw, in the early 80's, was the semi-legendary local band Roach Motel (who were friends and acquaintances of mine, my bassist played drums for them) playing in the basement of a dorm hall. Within a half-hour, they had frat boys throwing CHAIRS at them. Absolute genius.

I knew I had found my true calling.

Though I've still never managed to get furniture thrown at me.

Yet.
