Either way, I don't remember any bad bands so it must have been pretty decent. I was at the far back so I didn't really notice what guitars anyone was playing.
Members LeftyDan Posted January 21, 2006 Members Posted January 21, 2006 wow, there's a lot more torontoians here than i thought. I'm from Shelburne, about an hour away. I know this is really off topic, but do you guys have any tips on getting bands together, and getting them to properly work? we have myself and a friend of mine on guitar, my brother on bass,(cept he doesn't have his bass yet, wich is a rather large problem) and now our other guitarist doesn't want our singer. what should i do? any help would be great.
Members gdh Posted January 21, 2006 Members Posted January 21, 2006 hey Lefty I'm just down the road from you in Orangeville, there are quite a few very good musicians in our area have you talked with the guys at Acoustic Traditions about finding bandmates?
Members LeftyDan Posted January 21, 2006 Members Posted January 21, 2006 i never thought to ask when i went there, i had figured our members would have their instruments. plus, i'm not exactly good, so it's more of a friends getting together thing. but, i did check the store out, they've got quite the nice setup in there, but Broadway musical has a better lefty selection.
Members martianrebel Posted January 22, 2006 Author Members Posted January 22, 2006 Lefty, I feel your pain. In my band, we were looking for a singer a few years ago, and it just so happens that my best friend from High School is a classically trained, highly motivated singer. So, he came out and jammed with us and we started working on originals and so on. He's such a perfectionist, and an artiste that he was pissing off the guitarist and the drummer. He was taking us in new, wierd, wonderful directions that they really did not want to be a part of. I had to talk to him and tell him that he needed to start his own, all-original band, that we were more interested in playing fun, high-energy stuff and his songs of lost love, depression and political turmoil were too heavy for us (not to mention that the other guys couldn't figure out 7/4 time signature!) So he started his own thing and I play bass for him in that. He has total control and he is happier with that. My other band found a singer and we palyed for the last 2 years. We just parted ways with him because he was not showing up to rehearsals and tried to bail on a show, minutes before we were to take the stage. I guess what it comes down to is how much each person wants to do the band "thing", how commited each person is and wants each other to be, and open communication among everyone. If it's just a fun thing, then there's no point keeping someone around that isn't having fun, right?
Members LeftyDan Posted January 22, 2006 Members Posted January 22, 2006 he tried to bail right before a show? that's harsh. We sorta have someone lined up for a singer, but our other guitarist doesn't like him, so i need ways to convince him otherwise.

The only advice I can give is to talk to the guitarist and find out EXACTLY what the problem is with the singer, then you can help him to deal with his problem. At the end of the day, it's between the two of them to figure out. BTW, are you assuming the role of band 'manager'? The guy that sets up the jams and figures out the direction of the band etc.? If so, I feel for you. that's what I do in my band and with auditions for a new singer and trying to get things set up for gigs this year yada yada yada, it's almost a full time job.
Members LeftyDan Posted January 22, 2006 Members Posted January 22, 2006 lol thanks, i think i am ending up as part-player part-manager, and apparently his problem is he finds the singer weird. says he's gross. I find his inventing ways to say he's going for a dump to b hilarious. and to quote, click the little quote icon in my message, lol.
Members martianrebel Posted January 24, 2006 Author Members Posted January 24, 2006 .... So now we need a drummer. Our drummer didn't show for rehearsal WITH OUR NEW SINGER last night. I call him and he tells me that he hasn't been having fun playing music for a while now. What we have here is a lack of communication. It would have been nice to know that before we went through all of the headaches of auditionning singers. What a bastard. So, if you're a drummer in the West End of Toronto with your own gear and motivation to be in a fun band, PM me. I'm only bitter on the inside. P.S. Lefty, thanks for the tutelage!
Members LeftyDan Posted January 24, 2006 Members Posted January 24, 2006 No problem, good luck finding a drummer!
Members hammer744 Posted January 24, 2006 Members Posted January 24, 2006 Hey, just catching this thread now. I'm in Thornhill, but the band's out of Brampton. Cover band, seeming to mostly play the perimeter - haven't done anything in the downtown yet (though we'd like to come out of an open jam).
Members martianrebel Posted January 26, 2006 Author Members Posted January 26, 2006 Got a singer and a drummer lined up. Now we gotta rehearse and get good. I guess this is chapter 2 for martianrebel.
Members prblack Posted January 26, 2006 Members Posted January 26, 2006 HiThis a great thread! I am a female bass player in a classic rock and blues band. I'd like to hear from fellow gal musicians! Where do you play or jam?Where do you get gear? Come on girls I know you're out there!Pauline

Someone could make a lot of money opening up nearby while they clean up Cherry. Hmmm....
Members AJ6stringsting Posted January 28, 2006 Members Posted January 28, 2006 I play mostly 80's Guitar( Vai,Satriani,Malmsteen,E.V.H. and Rhoads), Blues, Classic Rock and Fusion. I heard the musicians up in Toronto, Montreal and Quebec are great and diverse. Just wondering if I could find good musicians up ther to play with?
Members martianrebel Posted January 30, 2006 Author Members Posted January 30, 2006 Come on up AJ! The weather's fine, the beer is strong and the ladies are lovely! There's a ton of great players to jam with in the Toronto area.
Members mr3lions Posted January 31, 2006 Members Posted January 31, 2006 Hi, I'm down here in sunny Windsor which technically isnt T.O. but, if you guys keep expanding like you do, will be considered a suburb in about 3 years. Let me know who's playing down here. The scene is pretty limited but I'll come check you out.

Members knspilka Posted February 1, 2006 Members Posted February 1, 2006 They've been telling us for months that they are selling all the amps to move in line 6 gear (boo) and everyweek i ask about it, cuz there is a super sweet silverface super there and a great jcm900 dual reverb with white tolex cab I would like to get my hands on. So far no news. We practiced there last night, and other than plywood blocking the main entrance it looked normal.

Members martianrebel Posted February 7, 2006 Author Members Posted February 7, 2006 I'm so proud that you all like this thread and have had some good discussion. I will definitely be checking out the guitarscanada forums too when I have a spare minute. It sounds like Cherry Beach wasn't as damaged as originally thought. I hope those guys get their building repaired and up and running. I'll shamelessly promote my gig now.... This Saturday, Feb 11th at Oasis (294 College at Spadina) theDreamHunter is playing a one-hour set, closing the show for Petrolia. There will also be the comedy stylings of Rob Francis and his Ornery Buddy. The gig is Pay What You Can, so even if you're flat broke, come on out and say hi. I'm the bass player. Doors open at 9:00.
