Alternative ways to find a singer.

Well my band and I have been looking for a singer for a while now and we've had one audition (who was a friend) and we've got one more coming on saturday. I've posted on local band forums and such but no one replies really. What are some other suggestions as to finding a singer?

Hey there!

I searched Harmony Central and Music Player forums for members from my city, sent them PM's asking for help. I got a couple of leads from them.

I also talked to the people that run the JamStudio where we practice, got a good lead from them because they know our stuff.

If none of those work out, I'm going to be haunting the karaoke and open mic nights!

Good luck!

We've been in the same place multiple times--we're on our fourth singer in 4 years.

The first one was someone who started out with all of us when we first got together. The second was married to the bass player's cousin; he also had a karaoke/DJ business on the side. The third (who also has a karaoke/DJ business) approached us after #2 died. #4 was a regular karaoke singer who would sometimes work for #3. #3 is still with us but because he's got a throat condition he can't sing for 5 hours in a smokey bar and still expect to run his karaoke business so the two of them trade off on songs and do duets/harmony.

I second martianrebel's suggestion of hitting the open mic nights and karaoke bars. You can audition the singers without them knowing they're being auditioned. At the same time you get a feel for their musical tastes by the songs they choose to sing.

If you are still young in high school starting out...... rob the chamber choir. Typically they wont be druggies,, they know how to sing harmony, have a good work ethic ..... many of these same people may well be singing at church or karaoke when they get older ..... their nerd factor may freak you out .... but, you are looking for people who can sing. rat

There are a lot of people that are less than enthused about their band situation. I feel a little bit uneasy about the practice but I think it can be tastefully done - I recently dropped an email to a singer through the band's website and said they were good and that I was looking for a singer. I asked them to let me know if they knew of anyone that might be interested. At the end of the email I jokingly asked if they themselves might be interested.

They were.

So hey, if all else fails try stealing someone from another band. Well you know what I mean.

;)

Ya i thought about stealing someone from another band, but I wasn't sure how to go about it. Now you've given me an idea.

As for the choir idea, I don't think so. We want a singer but not a choir singer. Someone who can do the bluesy rock/hard rock stuff.

The open mic/ karoke nights might be a good idea. Thanks.

well i can understand that you dont want to recruite in church ,,, but if you want people who can sing ,,,,,people who sang in chamber choirs in high school are some of the best vocals you can find .....its one of the few places people really lean to sing harmony .... They are the best of the best.... If you go to a karoke night and find a singer you reallly like ,, my bet is he sang in chamber choir in high school........It worked for me when i was putting a band together ...... good pipes are good pipes ....a good vocalist can sing pretty well any music .. if they like it. Dont let the choir boy thing scare you off ,,,, some of those guys can rock your socks off and sing harmony so tight that you hear overtones up off the top ........If your going on a raiding party for talent ,,,,, raid the best people you can...... Unless you are a really established working band its pretty hard to pick up an experienced lead vocalist and keep him around .... You take a non rocker with real talent and let him grow with the group ,, you have a loyal band member you can work with ......I think you will find that a good deal of the really good keroke singers have already been there and done the band thing ,,,,,keroke lets them have the spotlight ,, with out the hassles and commitment of a band ..with that said ,, i think its a good starting point....good luck on your search. The best band i ever played with was one that we built from the bottom up nabbin off people that sang chamber choir ,, and had concert and jazz band experience in high school........Our drummer was a girl ....her dad was a piano bar player his whole life ..... She sat in with woodie herman one night .... she is a band director now. Most bands would have never given her a second look ....she could beat a mean set of tubs ... Dont be scared to go out of the box ,,,, when lookin for potential band members ......rat
