I have been a music fan since Rubber Ducky in the tub as a little kid. LOL.... Seriously, my favorite live bands have been in order... Rush, Pink Floyd and Loverboy. How bout everybody else? Always listening.. The Strat Kat of Stratocruising..

As far as having a flawless live sound (and they only very rarely play live), as IMO a flawless studio sound...I'd go with Steely Dan.

If you're looking for theatrics and wackiness in a live show, then go see The Tubes.

For out and out balls to the wall rockyerfaceoff and showmanship, I'd say AC/DC fits the bill quite well. And of course The Who in their younger days.

Now, that's not to say that they're my favorite bands, although I certainly dig their stuff. But...I don't have any favorite bands. I like a lot of bands.

Robin Trower was the best show I've ever "seen". Technically, I didn't see much of the show, but I had my arms against the stage protecting some pretty blonde from getting crushed by the crowd the whole night. It's the only time in my life a bouncer ever walked around me.

I did see Bob Seger when I was 7-8 years old in 1973-4, but I didn't really know much about anything back then. It was at Ford Field, out in the burbs, not the Ford Field you all see on tv. I was on a lot of championship soccer teams on that field when I got a few years older. But back to the topic, I would've loved to see him at Cobo a few years later, (I would've still been too young, I guess).

As far as what musician I'd most like to jam with or see live today? Stevie Wonder.

Top 3 live bands?

I'd go with Dave Matthews Band, Phish and Dream Theater. The only 3 bands I can think of right now that sound as good, if not better live, than their albums and all have incredible musicianship in both mediums. Also, all 3 are capable of, and regularly, change it up live (especially DMB and Phish). None have a real flashy show, but I don't think that's the issue here though.

Kinda depends on what you dig about live shows. Are you looking for musicianship, or entertainment?

Musicianship - For me would be Rush, Dream Theatre, or Queensryche back in the day. I'm not a mega prog-head, but watching those guys perform is truly amazing to me. Oh, and Alison Krauss & Union Station always floor me.

Entertainment - Don't laugh, but Motley Crue in the late 80's. I mean come on... spinnin drumkits, strippers in nurse uniforms, {censored} blowin up... thats an entertaining show.

- Wilco, last tour. They finally got some great players, and it shows. Great musicianship. Listen to the Live in Chicago CD if you don't believe me.

- Barenaked Ladies. Don't laugh. I'm not a fan at all, but my wife took me to a show and I was impressed. They really know how to entertain their fans. Of course, the second time I saw them, they sucked, so maybe I just caught them on a good night.

- Black Flag, way back when. Sure, it was punk. Sure, it was sloppy. Sure, there was screaming. But I've never experienced so much energy in a room before. A lot of shows want to be big and bad, but this was the only show that was so intense I was actually kind of afraid.

I'm a big Replacements/Paul Westerberg fan, but their shows were always hit-or-miss with me. They were the best band in the world one night, the worst the next. Sometimes, they were both the same gig. So they get an honorable mention.

Worst show ever? Journey. No doubt in my mind.

Gotta pick seven Geezers......

Springsteen -- so-so recordngs, unbelievable live band

Pink Floyd

The Who

Sly & the Stone (when Sly showed up)

Little Feat (w/ Lowell George)

Allmans (w/Duane)

The Wailers (w/Marley)

I haven't heard a single recent band that matches these guys in performance. Maybe it's too much studio-done-live now.

Three great recent performances:

Flecktones

Eric Johnson

Dave Weckl

I'd like to pick some players under 35, but I'm putting a heravy premium on musicianship.

I think it's safe to say most musicians don't hit their musical peak until their mid 30's, even if it's not their peak of popularity.

{censored}. Lowell, Duane and Bob pretty much checked out by then. My theory? Too many current players going to see stylists instead of guitar teachers.

Stratocruiser , I remember Loverboy. I was dating a singer a long time ago in a cover band and the drummer would sing this one song: Turn Me Loose. He did a pretty good job too. I can't hit those high notes that's for sure.

I love M

What's up guys, I thought this would be a good thread for my first post.

Best live band: Frank Zappa and the Mothers. I haven't seen them with my own eyes, Zappa died when I was 1 year old, but I have some DVD's and Zappa blows away any band I've seen in terms of showmanship AND musicianship.

Second up: Dream Theater, because they are always spot on and always play for about 3 hours.

Third? I recently saw John Scofield play "the music of Ray Charles" heavily funkified. Small venue, I was probably 25-30 feet from the performers, totally righteous show.

Most entertaining: Dread Zepplin in the early 90's

Awesome musicianship, overall vibe: Brother Cane in a small, sweaty club

#1 favorite band: King's X. Inspiring stuff, so much heavier live

Honorable mentions: Big Wreck, Foo Fighters, (believe it or not) Blink 182.

I'd have to say the best live show I've seen is TOOL at the '98 Ozzfest. I wasn't even a huge fan back then but the energy coming offstage was amazing. They just nailed it. Then again I saw them a few years back and I fell asleep in my chair so I guess I can't say much for them now.

Other favorite live shows I've seen: Mars Volta, Built to Spill, Interpol, Tom Petty, and few others I can't remember :D

I've seen about 70 concerts. The 3 best were

The Who Quadraphenia show at the Forum in the 90's. I don't own any Who albums and this just blew me away.

The Grateful Dead in Las Vegas mid 90's

I saw the Dead about 10 times and this one time I'm pretty sure I saw God.

Tool at the Universal Ampitheater after Aenima

learn to swim bitches!

Neal Morse Testimony show in Whittier CA

played his entire double album and then some Spock's beard and Transatlantic songs as encores. People were seeing God all over the place, it was basically a christian prog show.

Now that I think about it I have walked out of concerts saying that was the 'best show ever' a bunch of times. Yes at hollywood bowl played Gates of Delerium and Ritual with an Orchestra. sick.

Iron maiden in the pit. nuff said.

Stevie nicks at Caesar's palace last summer. at the end of the Beauty and the Beast closer there were literally thousands of people in tears. I'm verklempt just thinking about it.

i've seen a few hundred shows myself

usually 2 1/2 hours into the show, no matter how good the band or how much i love em... i'm ready to go out and hang with my buds and play guitar myself

verry few bands really hold me for 3-4 hours

phish, the grateful dead, rush and jimi page with the black crowes

well maybee keller williams and larry keel could hold me around a bluegrass campfire all night long (and they have a few times)
