Absolutely. If playing in a good band is what you want to do, you gotta go out and do it. Waiting for someone else to come around to wanting what you do is counterproductive.

You have these friends that you jam with, know some tunes, and no one other than you really seems to be into the serious apsect of music...that situation is not a band.

Bands rehearse.

Bands intend to get gigs and go somewhere.

Band members make time for band related things, they learn their parts, they show up on time...those who don't do these things only think they are in a band, but they are not, because a band is a commitment.

You guys are young.

Sometimes, owning gear means ya gotta go out and play it.

But that does not make you a serious or committed musician.

Your friends own gear, so they play it.

You enabled them to play in front of an audience, but they don't seem to value that since they really didn't do anything to get there, except hold onto your coattails.

Don't burn bridges with your friends, but make it clear to them that as far as booking them another gig, it won't happen on oyur dime without some serious effort on their behalf.

Look for other players that are serious...Joisey is full of them!

Thanks very much for the replies everyone!

Heres an update for those of you following this:

The bassist down from NY state has said that he will definateley sing for our small show wednesday, and he also is interested in singing and playing bass for the show on th 7th...now i just need a drummer, another guitarist and/or a hot chick who can sing and play keyboards, a set list, and time to practice and we are rockin'.

more updates to come.

Dude, just take over all of the booking and promotion duties and tell that lame {censored} where to be and when to be there to play. Your problem lies in sharing too much bull{censored} with other members. It sounds to me like you're the dude with the fire under his ass, so harness that and launch the band without consulting with someone who you know is going to piss you off.

I like the "new band" that just appears and competes with the "old band" for gigs.

Then its not you being mean. You have not killed the "old band".

It is still available for jams and you have not burned any bridges. It will survive on its own merits.

You no longer have to carry this dead guy around and prop him up and tell everyone he is alive.

There never really was an old band; there was a few kids who played some cover songs at shows. That was it. There was never a sense of seriousness or band unity.

Ok, since many of you have been following this thread and it has remained on the front page w/o bumps from me, I've decided to continue with the updates.

The bassist from NY sang for the small show we had last sunday; he is'nt spectacular but mediocre vocals are better than no vocals.

Yesterday, we (meaning myself, the bassist from NY state, and the drummer who I was talking about) all met for a discussion regarding the Band Name, set list, and we had a brief jam to make sure everything went well. The drummer will get back to me today to make sure that he will be able to get out of his play early enough to come play the show with us; if not I have backups drummers, but if yes then we just need another rhythm instrument, probably a guitar but I will consider keyboards.

So, so far so good; lets keep our fingers crossed that this band doesn't go down the drain like the last one.

That sounds like the definition of torture....

"Now relax Mr. Bond, while I play for you my latest composition...."

People get some weird ideas about music.

What differentiates music from noise is that people actually like it, music that is.

So whatever sounds you're generating, if it isn't liked by the people hearing it, you're wasting your time doing it in front of them.

You are now dealing with these two opposites - "Music" and "Business". You don't have to leave the old people. Take them for what they are worth. Get together with them when they can. Jam. Throw pizza at each other. Have slumber parties.

And, get the new people together to work out arrangements and a better platform/discipline for betterer music. I'm in a few bands, some play out, some just jam, another plays crap but pays the best. In high school, and way way after that, you have to approach bands like girls. You find different ones for different needs. You like going fishing with one, going to movies with another, sex with someone else, and the list continues. If you try to get people to do things they don't want to, it won't work for very long.
