Members bonscottvocals Posted March 16, 2006 Members Posted March 16, 2006 OK, with Rock Star happening again, and all of the American Idol and Nashville Star reality shows, etc. there are a lot of opportunities for singers to make 'the big time'. If Rock Star was to replace your idol, who would that be?
Members Lee Flier Posted March 16, 2006 Members Posted March 16, 2006 Oh I dunno. I already have my dream gig. My band still has its collective goals, but I've got no desire to join some other band even if it's a famous one. I'm quite serious about that. But I realize I'm in the vast minority here. What's YOUR dream gig bon? I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess AC/DC.

Members BlueStrat Posted March 16, 2006 Members Posted March 16, 2006 The summer of 2001, I lived my dream gig-I had the best band I ever had, I was invited to a lot of higher profile festivals and concerts, and I played every weekend between April 15 and September 15 and only had to play clubs twice. The rest was all mainstage work, for good money. We got gear provided, rooms, food, and averaged 1200 buck a set, sometimes only $1,ooo but sometimes $1700. And then 9-11 hit, and a lot of national acts stopped going overseas, and were staying home, and were coming in at regional festivals for as little as 1500 bucks, so we started losing gigs to them. And it was back to a club scene that was waning, and still is. That one summer was sure great, though. If it could be like that all the time, I'd be happy.
Members curet30 Posted March 16, 2006 Members Posted March 16, 2006 Dream gig for me would be to sing with the TEMPTATIONS. I studied all the background parts (except for the late Melvin Franklin's bass parts) and can do most of the leads as well. If they ever call, even as a fill-in, I'd satisfy my life-long dream.

Whoa! very cool!

I can appreciate that. The Bee Gees (despite some people making cracks about the disco era) are a great trio. Musically and vocally great performers. Another artist who seems to be made fun of alot who I always thought was an outstanding musician and performer is Barry Manilow. Great piano player, vocalist and front man personality all in one.

Well, y'know...that's probably not unattainable for the right person. The Temps are pretty much a franchise act now, kinda like a sports team. Mind you, they still kick ass...but, I think there's only one original guy remaining. So, it's really just a matter of time 'til one of the current lineup retires, and then try to get an audition. My dream gig? Well, at this stage in my career, it would probably be to just play some cool local shows with my own project. I wouldn't want to be anyone else, really. Not that I really want to be me, either...

Hi Bongo, I'm heavy into vocal harmony so I also dig the BEE GEES. Another group that has some smokin harmony are the EAGLES. I'd like to sit in as the 3rd keyboardist (play some strings behind the main keyboard player) with the EAGLES. As for Barry Manilow, I like him much better now than when I first heard him in 1974. I'm also into standards too and I'm feeling the way Barry presents those songs.

Hi Tedster, When I turned 30 I said basically the same thing "at this stage of my career..." I figured I was too old to be a major star in the R&B circuit back in the mid 1990's so I sought opportunities as a backup vocalist. My initial search was singing backup for Smooth Jazz (or watered down jazz) artists like Rachelle Farrell, Phil Perry or Bobby caldwell. Instead I wound up singing doowop but it's a nice gig for a family guy like me. We gig about 30x a year and maybe 2 of those gigs are out of town. The rest of the time I come straight home after the gig.
Members JBJ Posted March 16, 2006 Members Posted March 16, 2006 i'd love to play in a session band for a massive touring act cos their bands are always spectacular.
Members tdempsey Posted March 16, 2006 Members Posted March 16, 2006 The dream died when I didn't get Entwistle's (Rest In Peace) slot.
Members Tedster Posted March 17, 2006 Members Posted March 17, 2006 When you turned 30? Heck, you're still a kid, bro... :D
Members JBJ Posted March 17, 2006 Members Posted March 17, 2006 in fact i'd love to work on a show band like letterman or american idol or something. anything like that. west end stuff would be great too. i saw the lion king in london a while ago and the 1st 3 tunes iw as raging because it sounded so tight and polished i thought it was just backing tracks being played:)

That would be a nice gig, playing with Cleto & The Cletones, Paul Schaeffer or even sing backup for the American Idol Band and as much as I hated the show, Dancing With The Stars band. Great pick JBJ:thu:
Members srsfallriver Posted March 17, 2006 Members Posted March 17, 2006 Maybe I don't have a good enough imagination but I think a few of my real gigs surpass anything in my imagination. I've played several gigs in front of crowds estimated at 8,000 - 10,000 people, I've done gigs in foriegn countries and been asked to sign autograghs by scores of fans. My absolute favorite was a small wedding done on a 40 story building rooftop, overlooking the Boston Independence Day fireworks. The fireworks show was fully in our view while the crowd danced away. Great night!

Speaking of the American Idol band, that has got to be one of the best cover bands I have ever heard performing on a TV show. I don't know if the term "band" describes the setup properly, it's more like a big band plus an orchestra. I don't watch the show all that often, but whenever I have tuned in and heard them playing they are simply outstanding. Much better musicians in my opinion than the Letterman or Tonight Show bands..

I was checking out the string section too! I was like "whoa - they're really going all out for this season". I'm big on horns & strings. When I played keyboards in an R&B band, I used to play the horn parts with our sax player; an urban version of Lorber & Goerlick (sp?)

Members Blackwatch Posted March 17, 2006 Members Posted March 17, 2006 I'd like to be doing what I am now but playing concert halls. Big stages and spotlights. Apreciative crowds. To be able to make a living at it, travel the world playing my songs. Just a couple levels to go.....
Members JBJ Posted March 17, 2006 Members Posted March 17, 2006 for all the guys talking about the american idol bands. somethign i completely forgot about and i have no clue why because it';s one of my most memorable and enjoyable musical experiences ever. when i was in high school the music department asked me and my bro to play guitar and him bass for the jazz orchestra they were using for an end of year production of buggsy malone. we were th eonly students asked to do it, the rest of the orchestra were made up of guys fromt he rsno, professional jazz orchestras etc... and just to get to play a different genre with so many talente dpeople and feel like part of a unit was great. it must be absolutely mind blowing to be playing in a band on a show like american idol if doing it for a high school show is so much fun and interesting.

Members bonscottvocals Posted March 17, 2006 Author Members Posted March 17, 2006 Curet30, next time I'm in the city, I'll have to look you up! You and I have a similar love for vocal harmonies. Wouldn't it be great to have sang with some of the great harmony bands like the Beach Boys, CSN&Y, ABBA, Bee Gees, Beatles, Blue Jays, Jacksons, etc?
