Well last night my band (The Ruckus), finally had our first gig. I guess you could call us a blues rock band. The singer/guitarist (Don) got us a gig at the local curling club (he curls there every wednesday). We got together Saturday afternoon to run over a couple of songs and then we all went and grabbed some dinner together. After that we left for the curling club and loaded in.

Unfortunately, Don's amp started somking on Friday during our practice so I had to haul my 4X12 and 2X12 to the gig. Well the tone was pretty damn good last night with my Boogie MKII and MKIII up there. We had our soundcheck around 9pm and there were all the curlers finishing up and watching us so we decided to play some George Thorogood - Get a Haircut for them, since we all have longer hair. I was very nervous at this point so I didn't play my best, but they seemed to like it.

Now soundcheck was done we had around 2 hrs to kill. Here's were my nerves hit the most. All our friends and friends of friends and family started showing up. They all wanted to talk but I just wanted to sit and chill. We had our friend play 6 songs as a sort of opener so he started just after 10pm. His set went pretty good with just himself up there. I know I couldn't have gone up there alone.

Now it was 11pm and time for us to hit the stage. We opened with ACDC - It's A Long Way which was a bit rough but no one seemed to notice. After that it was 3 originals and then we played Get a Haircut again. We took a short little break and by this time my nerves were gone.

Our second set was our best. Our best songs and everyone there was either bobbin there heads or dancing or clapin along it was amazing. I knew our band had some decent tunes but everyone there told me they were impressed with us. People I hadn't seen for almost 3 yrs showed up and people I didn't even know were telling me this. I was on cloud 9 haha. Even some other guitar players there were impressed with the band and our playing.

All in all it was a great night and I got many hugs and kisses from the ladies  haha. We even got paid for the gig and free drinks. We were asked to play there again and it'll probably happen in April sometime. Another cool thing last night was my friends girlfriends knows a local radio DJ. He has been around forever and is well known around Winnipeg and Canada in music circles. Anyways she told me he was asking when we can play a gig at a local restaurant for him, which I thought was pretty cool. Looks like we will play live again. I can't quit now.

Congrats!

Good feeling isn't it?

Sounds like you exceeded your expectations.

Butter up that DJ.

Be prepared to play more quietly in a restaurant.

Good luck!

Nope, you can't quit now.

Get back on that gig horse and ride.

I liked the story you related, it reminds me of my own feelings before I play. Tell us about the next time too.

Thumbs up man, you did good.:thu:

It's an amazing feeling I tell ya. I'll be wearing a smile for days. We will do our best for this DJ as we know he has many hookups and he likes promoting local talent. I think we can impress him as he works for a classic rock station and was big into the culture of the 60s and 70s. It also helps that we are all influenced by classic rock and blues with a nice twist of metal/hard rock mixed in.

it's great isn't it?

and it gets better. once the nerves calm down a bit, after a couple of gigs, you'll enjoy it even more.

i have to resist the temptation of writing down good gig stories here, but let me just say: nice work, and enjoy the life in a gigging band! you'll never know where it takes you!

Yea Man. That is what this stuff is all about. The thrill and rush of performing makes all the hard work of band rehearsals and all the other stuff that goes in to being in a band worth while.

I know that not everyone who playes an instrument even wants to perform, but I never understood the guys who only want to play in their bedrooms or garages and not get out in front of an audience.

For the second set we did 4 originals the BTO - Takin Care of Business and then finished off with another Original entitled River City Roll.

Also got some more good news yesterday. Looks like Dons got more gig hookups. He used to work at a restaurant and the day shift manager just so happens to be in a local band called the Perms. And in a month or so they need a band to play some gigs with. And so it begins . . .

Oh ya anyone ever heard of anyone else calling their band The Ruckus?? I've made stickers already so I hope there's no other Ruckus out there.
