Members danny0816 Posted March 25, 2006 Members Posted March 25, 2006 alright, so everybody (or almost everbody) covers at least a few songs in their set. I've found its a great 2cnd 2 last song, or if ur lucky enough 2 be called back on stage, a great opener for an oncore. And thats usually at the min., people generally like 2 hear something they know...so my question is, what songs do you guys try to cover 2 really get a place going? ive actually thought about queen's "we will rock you", maybe early in a set...but it seems a little cheezy. let me know guys, thanks
Members curet30 Posted March 25, 2006 Members Posted March 25, 2006 Hi danny0816, I sing with a doowop group that's celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. The group has released roughly 50 original songs between 1956 to 1996 (last CD released in '96). However, we do cover other groups from time to time. We always close with Isley Brothers' 'Shout' at most of our concerts. Other songs we cover are: o Come Go With Me - Del-Vikingso Ten Commandments Of Love - Moonglowso I Believe - The Earlso Ain't Too Proud To Beg/My Girl - Temptationso Love Train - O'Jays This link will take you to my website; discography site with MP3 player: Earl Lewis &The Channels Discography

I have read this sentence over and over, and I still don't have a clue as to what it means. 2cnd 2?
Members Ryst Posted March 25, 2006 Members Posted March 25, 2006 I don't cover anyone else's songs. Should I?
Members Eye_Of_The_Liger Posted March 25, 2006 Members Posted March 25, 2006 Originally posted by dougb415 I have read this sentence over and over, and I still don't have a clue as to what it means. 2cnd 2? 2cnd 2 = second to danny, there are a lot of old-farts on this forum, so you need to keep the internet teen-speak to a minimum if u expect 2 b taken seriously around here.
Members danny0816 Posted March 26, 2006 Author Members Posted March 26, 2006 haha, my mistake...yes, "second too", as in, not the last song you do, but the one prior to that final song. or if you go back on stage after your first set, a good way to get back into the show. sorry for any confussion, ill work on my blog skills, hehe
Members Tedster Posted March 26, 2006 Members Posted March 26, 2006 Joe...(CureT30)... Do you guys tour? If you're ever gigging in the Kansas City area let me know. Doo Wop and old soul/Motown rules!
Members Lee Flier Posted March 26, 2006 Members Posted March 26, 2006 Originally posted by Ryst I don't cover anyone else's songs. Should I? Only if you enjoy it. If not... no big deal. We usually throw a few covers in that might be kinda obscure but which we happen to like and fit in with our sound. We really enjoy it, and it's always fun when there's some music geek in the audience who recognizes one of the more obscure ones.
Members brassic Posted March 26, 2006 Members Posted March 26, 2006 If you (and more to the point, your singer) can pull off Queen, go for it. We do Dirty Deeds by AC/DC. It always goes down well, though once we played it at a club where the audience was mostly between the ages of 17-21 and many of them thought it was an original. We also do Cherry Bomb by the Runaways and Gary Gilmore's Eyes by The Adverts, but haven't really tried them out that much yet. I think the younger audience members won't really recognize those as being covers but they're great songs and fit in well with what we do (all-girl synthy punk rock).
Members DanteRTS Posted March 27, 2006 Members Posted March 27, 2006 We normally do all originals in our set. However, we periodically do a quick Medley. The last one went from "The Ocean", to "Bulls on Parade", to "Cult of Personality", and ended with Tool's "Schism". Just a couple measure of each. A quick punch. However, we have been toying with covering the song from "Rockstar"....... STAND UP AND SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOUT!!!

I suppose that using "penultimate" in place of "2cnd 2 last" would be too much to hope for.

I was thinking of making that comment but thought better since I am new to this forum, but someone did anyway. I like this thread. I am glad to hear that some folks in original bands do semi-obscure covers. My buddy & are hoping to start a band, and I would like to do a few covers we like. I do agree that it is nice to throw in a popular favorite as well.

No doubt, this would NOT be the time to use "penultimate".
Members danny0816 Posted March 28, 2006 Author Members Posted March 28, 2006 hahaha, you guys are cracking me up. i was trying to think up some witty comment, but i just gave up. im usually decent with words, too, but i figured i could just be casual about this...guess you guys are gonna keep me on my game . i will attempt to adequately prepare myself for upcoming endeavors in the near future. its just not as cool when i do it :(
Members maxnew40 Posted March 28, 2006 Members Posted March 28, 2006 When we pull off a cover towards the end of our original set it is either "Take The Skinheads Bowling" by Camper Van Beethoven or BBC by Ming Tea from the Austin Powers movie. Max

Members danny0816 Posted March 30, 2006 Author Members Posted March 30, 2006 because prior to yesterday, i did not know what that meant, or even that penultimate was a word im only what, 18? way 2 go education system! (its always easier to blame some else...look at eve in the garden

Members Brian Krashpad Posted April 2, 2006 Members Posted April 2, 2006 We used to occasionally do a rocked up "Time Warp" from Rocky Horror. We sometimes used to do a cover of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus, but we only did the first verse true to the original, the remainder we did like double-speed. Curerently we do a version of "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" that we just call "Irish Eyes." I do the chorus with just a vocal and semi-clean guitar, then the whole band kicks in and we do a punk-rock version of the chorus with 2 new sets of lyrics, with solos before and after. Basically, we never do a cover unless we mess with it and make it our own. BK

Your point is well taken, and accurate. I was doing a mainstage blues festival gig a few years back, an all-original set, when one of my sax players blew a reed. So, not wanting any dead air, I got a wild hair and counted out a SRV-ish version of the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" while he fixed it. It got the best reponse of any song anyone played by anyone all day, headliners included. Go figure! Yeah, it's nice to stick to your guns and promote your own music, but at the end of the night and into the next day, people were still commenting that "hey, you guys are the ones that did that Beatles tune! Outstanding!" Sometimes, a well-placed cover can help people remember you.
Members cherri Posted April 2, 2006 Members Posted April 2, 2006 Sometimes, a well-placed cover can help people remember you. Let me add: An orignal arrangement of a cover tune can be very effective. The only parts of "Love Is a Battlefield" that we kept were the words and the vocal melody. When there's a couple of songs a set (we do three or four sets) that they have heard before, and it's presented in an original way, it tends to go over very well and draw some of the shy ones out to the dance floor. Also, if your band's musical execution of a cover is kickass, it lends credibility to your originals.
Members VinceManzarek Posted April 2, 2006 Members Posted April 2, 2006 We do nothing but covers, but the crowd always reacts best to the classics like Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water and Gloria by The Doors (well I think it's originally by... Van Morrison ( ? ) .. if anyone can help me out here?) ... I know they're a bit clich
