Good ways of finding a lead singer?

This past couple of weeks me and a mate have started putting together a new band playing original material and we've managed to find another guitarist and a drummer and started jamming with them but neither of us have been able to track down a lead singer. I've bullitened myspace and had plenty of girls apply but as we wanna do motorhead/clutch style hard rock/metal I know none of them could handle that kind of vocal, plus male bands with a female lead are often dismissed as a gimick for some reason.

I've tried searching musofinder and there's no-one out there in my area, should I be looking somewhere in particular? (uk forumites may be able to help more there) how did you guys find your vocalists?

This might be a little off-subject but I think INXS recently found a killer good new lead singer in J.D. Fortune, I'm soooo glad that band is reviving itself after losing Michael Hutchence(sp).

Crazy, whacked out, totally wild idea: have a contest and invite people to sing with your band?

Its an idea I'd considered although in a slightly different way, thought about getting a few mates together having them all learn a song, something fairly simple and inviting them to jam with us and picking the best one, the only problem with that i can see is that alot of people will sing and jump about when your in a room with your mates but I need someone with stage presence as it was something that was severly lacking with the singer in my last band imo.

Yeah, there would have to be a lot of adaptations to the idea. But good to hear you're considering some unusual appraoches in working on your needs, best of luck with the project, let us know how you do.

Start by trying out folks in your circle of friends and maybe your extended circle. You may find a good lead singer in somebody who really had no idea that they could sing before. All you have to do is start by asking everybody you like to hang out with if they would like to be the singer for your band. Then if somebody says Yes try him or her out. Just get in there and do it and make something out of it. You might be surprised.

Just a thought...and this generally goes against the grain of most folks...

Most folks start out thinking "We're going to put a band together along the lines of (fill in the blanks)" and then they set about trying to find their dream people to fit that bill. Oftentimes that leads to frustration.

Just for a changeup, find some good people who work well together, and let that determine the type of band you put together. In other words, open up your options.

Finding a really good singer/front person is a huge stroke of luck. In 30+ years I've worked with three, YUP! three. You can audition 'til your dead, advertise your money away and walk the streets with a sandwich sign but it's still more luck than anything. Take a moment and thick of local bands you know, how many have the singer you would want? Strong chance it's none.

Go to karaoke bars. Seriously. There are always one or two fantastic vocalists at the K bar. There are wonderful singers that have no clue how network, find a band, they have no concept of gear, so they sing karaoke. But secretly they wish they could take that step up and make real music.

Some karaoke singers can't handle live music - unless the song goes exactly the same way, note for note, each time, they fall apart. You can weed those out quickly at audition. Some towns have 'live band karaoke' where the band has a huge list of cover tunes they can play for singers who want to get up and perform. You can watch those singers and see how they handle themselves on stage (and off - some of them have gignormous egos).

I don't think it's a gimmick to have a female lead in an otherwise male band. Last week at open mic I saw a band with a female lead singer who covered System of a Down and other male-sung originals. I thought it was kind of a waste. She sung below her comfortable range, and they did the same covers that all the other bands do. A hard rock outfit with a female lead singer is a great opportunity to stand out and be different.

That's good thinking.

I once had a lesbian singer like that. Now we have a guy who also sings karoake... but he adapts to the crowd by ad libing well.

We get along well despite a few problems, and although we can't be everything to everybody, we have a mix that works.
