I used Digital Performer 5 (and later 6) on a MBP with a Midi Timepiece AV USB and Hercules 16/12 firewire interface. I didn't replace the keyboard player because I am one but we were three peice and I switched between guitar and keys while running midi and audio backing tracks which I created all myself. I wouldn't even dream of using mp3s.

I also have Logic 9 which I've used for recording, haven't really looked at the methods of Main Stage. The thing that annoyed me about Logic is that they don't even follow OSX's own rules for identifying external MIDI gear with midinam and mididev files within AudioMIDI Setup. Rather a pathetically ironic situation where you have to paste all the patches for your external gear from within Logic.

My overall summary would be that Logic is great if you're doing things in the box while Digital Performer is much more straight forward if you want to control external MIDI units.
