Members madryan Posted January 18, 2009 Members Posted January 18, 2009 Buddy just got one and we're integrating it into his new rig and there's this hideous hum happening when we try to use the buffer and the output seems retarded. Anyone know why?
Members Spacehog26 Posted January 18, 2009 Members Posted January 18, 2009 I own one, and I had that hum problem at first. I can't remember exactly what I did to resolve it, but I know it came down to a grounding issue. The RG-16 is designed with a floating ground, the older models you had to take the lid off and ground internally, but I believe the later versions have a switch to lift the ground. I recall also having issues if I had a wall-wart too close to it (certainly an el-cheapo 9VAC supply that wasn't very well shielded). It's worth using a decent power supply with it - I power mine from a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power AC now. Certainly in my current rig I'm getting no hum problems. Ron Menelli at RJM Music is normally very quick to answer technical questions via his website, or on Huge Racks Inc, but he's at NAMM at the moment (launched 5 new products this year, including the Effect Gizmo that I'm very excited about) - I'd guess he'd be back replying to emails by Tuesday or so.
Members John Busbee Posted January 18, 2009 Members Posted January 18, 2009 I've used RJM stuff since '05 and can speak for Ron's integrity, which is of the highest order. He'll take care of any problems or questions you have. Send him an email or even call direct (I don't know how big he's become, but he used to answer his own phone!).
Members sgill72 Posted January 19, 2009 Members Posted January 19, 2009 take the cover off and make sure the trim pot for the buffer and completely counter clockwise so it is at unity gain. i had the same problem because the buffer was too high.
Members Kendall Posted January 26, 2009 Members Posted January 26, 2009 I know that there were some design revisions at some point, though I'm not sure how/if the buffer was messed with at all. Earlier units have no screws between all the 1/4" jacks on the back and later units do have screws located halfway between each set of jacks.
Members madryan Posted January 26, 2009 Author Members Posted January 26, 2009 Turns out it was just proximity to a cheap wall wart with a slightly dodgy cable thrown into the mix.
Members Spacehog26 Posted January 26, 2009 Members Posted January 26, 2009 Yep, that was my problem too. It seems that the RG-16 could be a little better shielded to prevent this, although so definitely could be the wall warts!
