TRS (stereo) plug only works when pulled slightly out?

Recommended Posts

I'm using a 1/4" TRS to 1/4" TRS to change channels on my head.

Has always worked until a plug when bad, so I replaced it with a new one.

Soldered it all up tonight, had solid joins/connections.

I used the old plug to learn what cable goes where.

Now my amp will only switch channels when the plug is half pulled... and works fine, I'd just like to be able to push the plug all the way in like I used to

Anyone know about this sort of stuff?

First, I will compare mechanically both plugs, new and old to see if there are difference between them...

It sounds like some wires got swapped around. It's not always clear which solder terminal goes to which part on the plug - the tip, sleeve, or ring, so an ohmeter is practically a necessity for doing this kind of stuff. You can get one for $10 - $20.

I like the avatar. :)

^ thanks :D

I'm an idiot

Soon as I looked at the plug again this morning, I noticed straight away that the ring and tips had been switched around on the new plug.

I've done what you all said...wired the tip and ring to the wrong points
