Members UMT
Ok, I'm considering doing a solo act and researching LED lights.. Question: I'm looking at 'DMX cables' and they look to me like a standard XLR microphone type cable. IS there any difference? If so, what is it? Thanks, UMT
Members drummer762
There is a difference between DMX cables and microphone cables. They make look the same, but they are different inside. The impedance of a DMX cable is higher than a mic cable. DMX cables are typically shielded differently than a mic cable. Can you use a mic cable with lighting? Sure. Your mileage may vary though. It may or may not give you any problems. My advice is that if you are going to buying some lighting gear, buy DMX cable for them.
Members BillESC
Good advise. Also run a stripd of colored tape around the cable at one end to signify it a data cable and not a mic cable.
