Members skier4467
If I am understanding ohms correctly then 450w x2 @ 4 ohms will equal 225w going into each of my 4 speakers since they are all 8ohm speakers. If this is right then I think that this would be loud enough. Right? We are a blues band putting 3 vocals through the PA. We don't play that loud and we usually only play bars with 50 people in them (this is rural Vermont). We use 2 Peavey PR12s as mains and 2 Carvin 10s as monitors. I am thinking of getting the following power amp:Samson SX1200 33lb $299450w x2 @ 4 Ohms300w x2 @ 8 Ohms If that isnt loud enough then I'd get this:Samson SX1800 SX 37lb $389600w x2 @ 4ohm400w x2 @ 8ohm However, money is an issue so if I can get away with the SX1200 then that would be great! Lemme know! Thanks. --edited
Members wvuviv30
450 watts at 4 ohms into 2 8 ohm cabs will give each speaker 225 watts. Your going to need 2 amps if you want stereo mains. Are you carvins the LS1002? Which are rated at 200watts cont and 400w peak at 8 ohms. for the PR12 in stereo, look for a used QSC RMX2450, they can be had for around of $350. Members Gary in NJ
I think the RMX1850HD would be a better choice. The PR12's are rated at 400 watts Program, so about 200-250 RMS. At 4 ohms the 1850 will provide 550watts, or 275 per speaker. The 2450 will provide 650 watts, or 325 per speaker. That might smoke 'em.
Members agedhorse
The new QSC GX3 is ideal for that application and it is very inexpensive too.

Members Not Serial
@25lbs that looks like a good monitor rack amp for those folks that do not need 1000watts in a wedge. a lot lighter than my crest amp.

Members coyote-1
I would think it is. That looks like a good amp...however, no one has answered my question....is 450w x2 @ 4ohms enough? agedhorse's recommended amp (QSC) falls into the same power range, so I suppose he also thinks that's enough power. CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted January 24, 2008 CMS Author Share Posted January 24, 2008 That should be plenty of power. Don't obsess over a fe wdowzen watts one way or another, as it takes a lot of power to really increase or decrease volume.
Members Singin' Dave
That looks like a good amp...however, no one has answered my question....is 450w x2 @ 4ohms enough? Yes, it'll do and I second the aged ones rec. Get yourself some more efficient speakers and it'll cover more than just 50 folks
Members Gary in NJ
is 450w x2 @ 4ohms enough? I had to do a gig this past summer while one of my Mackie amps was in for service. So I ran FOH - 2 PR12N's - off Channel 1 (425watts @ 4 ohms) and 2 SM12 monitors off Channel two. It worked just fine. So to answer your question, yes it is more then enough for a mid-sized (1,500 - 2,500 sq.ft.) room.
