Members LPTwin
i also have a Sansamp RBI bass preamp. would it generally be better, tonewise, to just plug my bass w/ active preamp onboard directly into the house PA? would the RBI make it two preamps in a row and therefore cause problems such as tone muddiness or impedance or other issues? help me out, sound guys! thanks! Members allexcosta
It depends. Some pre-amps work fine with the sansamp, others don't. I remember the EMG BTC doing fine, but since I started using a J-Retro I ended up selling my sansamp and have been using a passive DI since then. CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted November 11, 2009 CMS Author Share Posted November 11, 2009 try it both ways and let your ears, and those of the soundman and audience, determine which is better. Don't forget that you'll still need a passive DI to connect your active bass to the PA system.

IME, the Sansamp works just fine as a DI, for both passive and active basses.

But it's a bigger (for a DI) 1U rack unit that needs power, where a small passive DI would do what's needed (matching impedance and balancing the output) for the job. Members allexcosta
Oh, you meant that he'd still need a DI if he decided not to use the Sansamp... Got it now, sorry...
Members LPTwin
gotcha...i have a tobias growler with quad coil bartolini pup and 18v active preamp. i would miss the drive and mid control on the RBI but the sound guy has told me my signal has "too much low end or muddy or something" and i haven't been able to be out front to hear myself through the PA while playing. i noticed in a recording off the 'board, my sound did seem really vague and indisctinct (using the RBI)..more so than it seemed when i was playing and hearing myself through the stage wedges. i want more punch and clarity and so will try going direct into the house DI without the RBI and, as stated, let my ears be the guide. Members allexcosta
^ Usually a very simple issue if you understand basic EQ'ing.
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted November 12, 2009 CMS Author Share Posted November 12, 2009 Agreed. You're putting a lot of low end on your signal right at the bass. The issue or question is, do you really need that? Take off some LF at the bass, and see if that makes joy for the sound guy and you.
Members LPTwin
thanks for the replies! it's a bummer that the way the stage/PA is setup, it's too far forward for me to be able to walk out and hear myself through the PA. it'd be an easier fix if i weren't relying on the the SG...
