Not so much high-tech....

I recently purchased first the body then the neck of a 1983 Squier SQ Telecaster MIJ. Slowly I'm restoring it to its former MIJ glory (?) but there's no doubt that the FujiGen plant turned out a high-quality product during the Fender/Squier MIJ years. The guitar is in excellent condition considering its age, and in fact spent much of those years in a red guitar case, as exhibited by the (former) red stain on the neck. I was able to remove that with a light sanding, but now I'd like to remove the vague red stain on the body as well. Any suggestions? Obviously sanding it off isn't practical nor would I even try. I'm thinking a light polishing compound, like the ones used on car finishes. Will those work on the polyester paint?
