Members kr236rk
Hi, Why does a lap steel sound so different to an open-chord electro-dobro please? The lap steel has that classic Hawaiian sound, whereas the dobro is more bluesy - but why? Thanks :)
Members Freeman Keller
The simple answer is that a lap steel is an electric guitar, it makes its sound by the strings moving thru a magnetic field. A "dobro" is an acoustic guitar, it makes its sound by the cone moving air. Various kinds of pickups can be added to a "dobro" to amplify it - some are more true to the cone sound. Moderators daddymack Posted April 19, 2021 Moderators Share Posted April 19, 2021 Sorry, but lap steels can sound anyway they want, because as Freeman stated, they are electric guitars. I have used lap steels for blues, country and country swing.

I have a Dobro 33H, a Dobro F60 and a Chandler lap steel I'd love to have a good old raw steel body. National have a seriously big fat neck.
