Members ksl
Hi all~ Me being one who likes my nuts to securely & tightly in place,🤔, as they ought, I'd like to know, that w/o running out do Home Depot to fill a 'cement pond, what typical household compounds can be used to fill to use, and/or mix, to fill the that 1/32 bit of space? And, does it at all matter if I secure the nut towards the headstock side, or to the fret-side before filling the gap? Many thanks, again~ 🕉🎶
Members mrbrown49
Filling is a bad idea. Either leave the gap, or get a wider blank and have it custom cut.
Members DeepEnd
You can try a shim, maybe a piece of veneer (a trick I learned from a local guitar tech), but your best bet is a nut that's the correct size. In any event, if there's a gap it should be on the side away from the fretboard. Shifting the nut will affect intonation.

Members Grant Harding
Using home handyman stuff to do guitar repairs is really really low rent. Please don't advertise as professionally refurbished when you sell it.
Moderators daddymack Posted April 20, 2021 Moderators Share Posted April 20, 2021 oh, to complete the advice: the nut should be secured against the fretboard. What is the 'space' width and what is the nut 'width' [not 'length' as we normally would refer to it]? It sounds to me that you have the wrong nut... Members Grant Harding
Not to mention that the distance from the nut to the first fret is one of the most crucial things to get right for a guitar to play in tune.
