Red Flag warnings, high fire danger...[Happy Holidays, suckers! Thanks Santa...Ana] I hate that magnolia tree...it is always something...leaves like shoe leather, seed pods the size of anti-personnel grenades, little red beans all over the place...but it is a 'city maintained' tree, but that won't stop me from 'trimming' it when the wind stops... So I had to dispose of the damned thing...decided to use the 2" loppers instead of the chainsaw...probably just as well...no sawdust blowing around...filled both recycling bins... then MommaMack decided she needed all the 'fixins' for a 'traditional Filipino' dinner, so who went to the store? ['well, you are already up and dressed, you go...'] So, yeah, I'm done for the day... I have a Royal Poinciana that abandons some of its branches, but they are light weight and easy to dispose of. By the time they break off they are dry, and I can snap a 2" branch with my foot. While 2020 was a strange year, I resumed performing private parties in late June. We even got a road gig in Kansas City in late August for a client we performed for in 2017. Considering the infection rates in Texas recently, I would be remiss if I didn't suggest you not play out, but obviously, you are doing it. Costing me over a grand but the last time I cut my hedge, I got bad tennis elbow and could barely play for a couple of weeks. Hmmm come to think of it, I'm not playing anyway, but OTOH I won't use an electric chainsaw in the rain, and all it does is rain here So I finished my "string" of holiday gigs. December 24th, 25th and 31st. Very quiet. NYE had some diners in the restaurant next to me, one person sitting at the bar, a table in the meeting room behind the fireplace wall and at most six or seven people in the lounge. I might have mentioned that unlike the USA, our airport is very quiet. Ninety percent down in business, the hotel might be around that too. It was great to see the staff, but strange to play to no one (although as far as covid goes, that was fine}. Wearing a mask for four hours was a drag. Except for keeping my chops up, I'm in no rush to do more gigs - at least not inside. Btw the area shown in the picture is only half the lounge, and the restaurant past the fireplace is the same size as the lounge. The musos set up by the column shown, and play through a Bose L1. I gave all the people who cancelled the choice of either getting their deposit back or applying it to a future gig. Thankfully they all wanted me to apply the deposit to a future gig. Leilani and I got aggressive calling hospitals when we found they got a shipment of vaccines, so we'll get our first dose this week. When the gigs open up around here, we'll feel good about playing. A friend of mine played in a 4-piece band for a younger audience. They had a couple of bar gigs. 3 out of 4 caught COVID-19, and one of them died (he had a pre-existing heart condition). My wife and I got it late September and while we felt bad for about five days, we recuperated without incident. In fact, I was quite busy with my voiceover business and was recording something almost every weekday while I was ill. I've had a couple places check my temperature upon arrival but that's it. Members Shaster Posted January 5, 2021 Members Share Posted January 5, 2021 I'm sensing this isn't the place to debate whether Covid is overblown or not, but I can say I know of a half dozen people who have had, or rather have admitted that they have had Covid. Two of them died, one almost died, one had to temporarily close their business, another was quite ill for some time. Now maybe they all lied to me, and the dead people are hiding out on an island, but like I said, I just don't want to debate Covid. Anyway... I took my gigs because I knew the room was very large, and would be very quiet and I trusted that the staff would be very stringent with health protocols. That, and it facilitated my EI claims; but like I said, I am in no rush to get back to the grind under these circumstances.. Notes, sorry for your loss. Pre pandemic and post vaccine, YVR Fairmont is a great choice. You can't get stuck in traffic and miss your plane, the staff is fantastic, it's a 25 or so train ride to downtown Vancouver, and there's a casino nearby (in normal times). Plus it's a short cab ride to some of the best Asian food on the West Coast, due to the large Asian contingent from China that live nearby. As I've mentioned, I played there every Monday for three years. Took me a while to find something to do with my Mondays after the music was cencelled. Why else would those very politicians telling you that there is nothing to worry about rush out to be the first vaccinated? If it isn't a big deal, why get the shot at all? His wife said she thought she was going to die in isolation, not getting to say good-bye to her children, not seeing another human who wasn't in a hazmat suit, and fighting for days with all her might just to breathe. My bro-in-law says, "We were stupid". A wind instrument player on another forum that I know got a mild case, and now has permanent lung damage. He will never have the capacity to play his sax, flute, or clarinet like he did before his mild case. He never went in the hospital, had fever, coughed a lot, and lost his sense of smell/taste. In a couple of weeks he felt all better, until he picked up the sax. The disease fused millions of lung cells together. They no longer work. If you watch/read any news you are being misinformed. If you watch/read FOX and further right or MSNBC and further left you are not being misinformed, but manipulated. The propaganda in both ends are done very well by the best advertising and PR firms in the business thus they are very believable, even if 50% or more of what they tell you are lies. If you believe half of what you are being told by the media is false, how do you know where to begin believing? Rather than living in an echo chamber, there are plenty of fact checking websites that will tell you exactly what is and is not true, and why. I spend some time every week debunking nonsense people send me...and yes, from both sides of the aisle. FACT: Over 390,000 Americans are dead from Covid-19, which is like wiping out an entire US city the size of Tulsa, Minneapolis, Honolulu, Omaha, Miami, Tampa, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Arlington TX or Witchita KS... If you were fortunate enough to get a 'mild case', like Trump [even though they put him in Walter Reed...the big show] then consider yourself extremely fortunate.
