Neck or Bridge pup or both

Most of the time, I use both. For a few songs, I'll use just the bridge, for others, just the neck. Note that I play Rickenbackers, so the bridge pickup is closer to the position of a P-bass pickup than on most other basses, and the neck pickup is closer to the neck. In fact, it's where the 24th fret would be, if there were one.

Another trick is to roll off the volume on one pickup slightly. That lets one pickup take the lead, while not going all the way to a single pickup sound. On the Ric, that usually means backing off on the neck pickup a little. That gives me a more punchy, midrangey sound, with some of the fullness of the neck pickup added in.
