the one step back...

Well it's been 2 steps forward the last couple weeks but the 1 step back is:

in the last 2 months we've had....

1 major casino cut music from 6 nights (2 shifts fri, 3 sat, 2 sun) to music 3 nights a week (1 shift ea) with thier budget less than 1/2 per shift

1 minor casino close

2 long time bigger rock clubs close

1 smaller newer club close

All of these on the south end (tacoma but not in tacoma) in the last few months. Most have indirectly affected me but the last call I've been doing a weekly there and it's been a life-saver when uring slow weeks. gone.

Bummer. Music scene is still dwindling. At this time last year I was busy busy doing shows, this year I'm hardly working.

me three. i've started ramping up recording to compensate for lack of FOH, i make more money per gig that way and less hours, no truck/trailer and a lot less satisfaction as well. FOH is my thing, and i aint been getting what i need this year.

i like recording too, but i have found that while i think people have a wide variety of what they think live sound is/should be it is nothing compared to the insane/stupid ideas they have about what recordings are.

and i still wont commit fraud so print this out ryan and show it around school.

Live or in a studio? Do you just record live tracks off the board direct outs or ? I kinda have a 24 track for that (loaned out at the moment pending sale). Do you do the mix or just provide the raw tracks?

I agree. They need to come out from their stupid viewpoints on recordings.

I feel for you guys on this. For me, the sound side has always been more of a hobbyist thing to help with my bass playing stuff. I just sold off my old gear after upgrading to smaller, lighter, more modern gear, and took a bath on it. The only thing I got what I was asking was my old Peavey DPC 1400X power amp on the 'bay.

Times is tough, that is for sure.

Well said. Some folks have been imagining their grand compositions for years, and often there's no way to turn their pipe dreams into reality. I used to have a small demo studio in my house, with the old ADAT and Mackie set-up (tells you how long ago) and just let that side of things drift away - didn't have the patience.

As to work, my mid week music gig just got cancelled. Found out the place was spending close to $5000 a month just on storage space. With biz decisions like that, no wonder they can't affor a band:(

The economy has been acting like a rolling blackout. A lot of regions that held fast are now crumbling, and places that got hit hard at the beginning of the recession seem to be slowly pulling out of it. Hopefully it won't be as deep or last as long for the late 'bloomers'.

The best I can say is, I'm still employed and paid weakly. There are 3 weeks this coming summer that have NO SHOWS booked. I already lost 1 week (a forced temporary lay off - so I got unemployment pay). I DO have a couple of weeks of vacation due so I'm probably OK. We used to be booked 9 months out, now it's more like 3 weeks to 3 months out. There are a couple of shows in Oct & Nov on the calendar.

The Casino I work for has cut back their Cabaret shows to 3 days per week from 4 and is sometimes booking cheaper acts in the room where I primarily work. I know our Local union (My room is non-union) IS NOT busy at all. My home value keeps going down (although the fall has slowed a lot) and the sky is going to fall on me any day now :>)

Bummer.

Their are 4-5 house gigs in my county. 4 have in house gear, 1 my freind does for $100 a night ( 2 nights). one only pays $75 bucks ( 2 nights), another is spotty and unreliable ( guys show up and the band cancelled, and other excuses. Jobs are maybe 4 nights a month) + it only pays $75. Onother one is a casino, I do know the guy that does it pays about $150 a night (5 nights) and the last pays $125 per night with gear.
