Good morning..  Havent been around these parts in years. Glad to see that the search function was never fixed..  gives me a sense of comfort in discomforting times!   HAHA

so my dilemma is this.. I want a Les Paul styled guitar -- but not necessarily at Gibson or even Epi prices. I'm not a tinkerer, so something that is playable/giggable with very little changes needed. I had a Ibanez Artist years ago (my first guitar WAY BACK WHEN)   and I loved it -- but was never a huge fan of the double cutaway Artist. I now find myself looking at the Art120QA since it's relatively inexpensive, and vury purty. Im not necessarily looking for a Les Paul killer, just another fun guitar in a style I don't have.

Does any one have any of the Art120QAs? What are your impressions? Have you compared them to Epiphones? How about other Les Paul type guitars (like ESP?)

Thanks!   Tom

Welcome back Tom!

FYI, search works fine now. The current software (Invision) is probably the best we've ever had.

I don't have an Ibanez Art120QA, and I've never played one, so I can't offer you any advice on that. Hopefully someone else will be along shortly who has experience with them and can offer you their thoughts on them.

I also have never played that model, but I have played some hollow body artcores. For the coin they are not bad at all.

PRS imports are very nice for the money too. I also like the Gretsch Electromatics stuff. If you get one, you can someday put in some TV Jones pups and the thing will rock. It won't sound like a Les Paul, it will sound way cooler. I have a Jet Power Jet from the professional collection. I even like Bigsby's.

I love the Blue

Toss in another 100 bucks for a hardshell Gretsch case.

It's an option

Mikeo, did you notice he didn't want to pay Epiphone prices? Apparently not...

Okay, FUBTAG, have you looked at Reverb.com?

Agiles are showing up used, among others...

Does the guitar have to be new?

Have a look at Guitar Fetish, they have LP style axes at lower range pricing...

Firefly, Grote and a zillion other labels on LP style guitars these days

Thanks daddymack!     I am well aquainted with Guitar Fetish.  I go WAYYYYY back!  Have had so many of them over the years  -The picture is of my first MIM with a GuitarFetish custom pre-wired pickguard - my GAS waxes and wanes and now that we are in our homes and on our computers.. it is in it's waxing phase.

Reverb has been a deadly sort of place recently for me..  I ended up with a spur of the moment $1600 purchase.. so   yeah..   ARGH!!

I have only recently heard of Firefly  -- never heard of Grote..  I guess I need to start frequenting the forum again. So you are saying that, my initial request is not as simple as Is Ibanez a good LP styled guitar.

well, nothing is ever as simple as it appears on its face, right?

As you observed, no one here has any experience with that particular Ibanez LP copy...hard to believe, but there it is.

My educated guess, after looking at some data and pics and reviews, based on my knowledge of Ibanez' other setneck guitars is that it is probably as good as or better than many other copies...

But there are so many out there, and the quality levels, in that price range [~$350] is getting so much better...that said, having 'Ibanez' on the headstock would be 'reassuring'...

I feel your pain on the spur of the moment purchase. I'm about to pull the trigger on a Martin 00028

I'm torn between the standard and thr clapton models

I played a Clapton model in Sam Ash somewhere in CT -- it was used and priced ridiculous..  but I didn't pull that trigger, thankfully. PLayed amazing though..  'The one that got away' ....

I think the standard model has a less of a V neck, and slightly different bracing.

Might work better 4 me

To you, apparently nothing, but to him, he made a point to specify it.

The guitar he asked about retails at ~$350...and you go in with PRS and Gretsch?  He's looking for a new toy...

Some folks, myself included, approach guitars [and other gear] today as a 'bang for the buck' deal rather than slavishly buying top brand names expecting better quality. I own plenty of Gibson, Fender, Guild, Martin...but I also have Epiphone, Carlo Robelli, Applause, Memphis [an antique], Danelectro...

You don't have to spend more than $500 to get a guitar that will make you happy.

I almost spit out my coffee when you mentioned buying a $500 Electromatic Jet, and then putting in a $300 pair of TV Jones...:freak:

TV Jones are about 300. He could do it later.

Hope you did burn yourself.

I have a philosophy on doing it right and do it once. Some folks buy and sell, buy and sell till the just buy a les Paul.  Which is really what they wanted in the first place.

The epiphone ellist guitars are very nice. Once again, I'm over the 350 mark.

Boys.  Boys --  I guess some things DONT change with time..   haha

So --I have $350 in GC gift cards just itching to be spent. i dont want to add money to it. Im just looking for something maybe a little different and maybe even a little fun.  I use a MIM Players Telecaster (dual Humbucker)  and I found I love it..   and would like a matching LP style. Even it if WAS Epi - though the quality of Epi at the price point I would think isn't as good as Ibanez (or other similiar manufacturers) at that point.

I'm an Ibanez head, and proud of it. I've seen the ART120's used in p[awn shops for the 120-200 mark, and they don't impress me that much. Epiphone wise, I found a Custom silverburst pro, with the coil tapping and phase switch, for 150 in a pawn shop. Plays about 95% as good as my old 81 Gibby custom. I can also highly recommend the Agiles from Rondo, that occasionally you see on sale for the 300-400 range. Fantastic guitar for the price, easily standard quality.

I am a big fan of Ibanez guitars. I own an AEG315 (electric acoustic), AF85VLS (jazz box) and AS93FMT (335 style). and all are fine guitars. I recently purchased an Artstar AM153QA (small doublecut semi-hollow) that is just exceptional. I am not a fan of Epiphone guitars. I have never owned one that I haven't felt the need to change out the pickups with the exception of my Casino which came with Gibson USA electronics. Even the newest pickup iteration (ProBuckers) sound like you are playing through your amp with the cover on. If all you play is high gain stuff, it probably matters less, but played cleanly, they have a muffled, honking mid-rangey tone.  I have sold every Epiphone I have ever owned except the Casino. This includes a Dot, Dot Deluxe, LP Plus-top and Ultra III. I never liked the flattened back profile on the necks and of course the electronics.

I have owned a couple Michael Kelly Patriot Customs over the years and they were good guitars. I sold one, missed it and bought another exactly the same (cherry sunburst) but decided I really wanted a Gibson Les Paul and sold it. Something about them keeps calling me back though. I picked up this brand new, made in Korea Decree for under $300 incl. shipping. It has a graphite nut and ebony fretboard, coil split push-pulls and a wild burl top with transparent black back. It was set up perfectly right out of the box and even though the pickups are not the higher end Rockfields that came in the Custom, I like these better. The single coil settings do not have the huge volume drop that they had on the 2 customs I owned. I really think this is a sleeper of a guitar and the build quality is perfect.

Lots to choose from here on the cheap https://www.ebay.com/sch/barryclarkmusic/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=

I just bought 2 blems from him and the flaws would pass as first quality anywhere else. You can't beat Ibanez from a bang for the buck and the discounted pricing on these blems is just a bonus. I have been buying guitars from this seller for over 10 years and he is very trust-worthy. You can pick up the phone and call him at his music store in Tomah, WI also. I have only owned one Ibanez LP, an ART400 with active pickups. Great guitar but sounded terrible. due to the active pickups.

There are also a couple new Michael Kelly Patriot Decree guitars listed, a Caramel Burst flametop, the other a Honey Burst flametop. I am really enjoying my Decree Black Vapor. Good pickups, Grover tuners, coil split switching and gig worthy. In this case, I think you'd find the Michael Kelly the better guitar if its a Les Paul style you're after. The Caramel Burst (darker one) one is listed for $238 OBO plus shipping. New but open box.

The shape of those kind of remind me of the old Yamaha Weddington series, which I think have been discontinued for ages... but I remember trying one out at a NAMM show years ago and being really impressed with it. I haven't played many Michael Kelly guitars; really just one - a studio client of mine had a strat-style one that was a pretty decent guitar.
