If it was mine I'd gear it so you could just barely still break traction from a dead stop with a normal load
:thu:
.

Stock Ford autos could be started in second and I know some other manufacturer's modded trannys can do the same - is yours like that? If so can it break traction in second from stopped? Can you measure the converter stall RPM that way?
:)

My 150 would do this.

To late at this party, but Im anotha brotha! LOLS I had a 71 Impala as well as a 63 SS Impala. Both cars were pretty stock. My "fast" car was a 66 El Camino with a built 327, 202 camalback heads and all the trimmin's. What really made her fun on the streets was the 4.56 possi 12 bolt rearend and a real B&M trans. What a fun car!

But... but, but, but... I have a truck... actually two of them. They're freight haulers... picked for their engineered practical aspects. Sometimes you just gotta kick practicality to the curb and just do something (anything) purely for the hell of it. My way of thinking: So-long as they're still making fossil fuels... I'm gonna have a little fun with it... during those precious few minutes I have in a day every few weeks to do such a thing. WTF... I'm having fun with the project so-far... I've got most of the body work right... the interior is near perfect. I'd like to finish getting the drive train right before pulling it down for the paint and powder coat finishing before the final assembly.

I'm sorry...I thought you were only using it for trips to the store, not as a "fun" vehicle, but your clarification, well, clarifies when you're gonna have fun.

In which case, leave it alone mecahnically, since it sounds as if it's set up just right for some fun...who cares what the gas mileage is on the highway?? You'll spend more trying to improve rpms/mileage than it'll return, and it'll be less fun if you castrate it.

Drive it like you stole it, and keep a jaundiced-eye out for Johhny Law!!!:lol::lol:

Oooh!!!!!! '71 Impala! When I was about 17 (1978-ish) I used to see a guy with a medium blue convertible Caprice. Total sleeper...had the SS wheels, white-walls, nothing at all to indicate that it had a 417 and was built from fan to axle. He smoked anything that dared to blip its throttle at the lights on our main drag. All that while carrying 5 passengers in total comfort. Sweet.

On the other end of the spectrum my Geo Metro had two overdrive gears and there are hills around here where you have to drop both with just you in the car. My favorite car of all times was my '85 ford escort wagon with a mitsubishi 4 banger diesel in it - I ended up wiring in a "Nitro" style throttle switch to shut down the A/C and alternator when floored - damn near doubled the horsepower to the rear wheels I swear :freak:. I think by now yous guys might have noticed that I most enjoy getting the most out of the least, hence my affinity for underpowered vehicles and PA's . My de-EPA'd XL1200 spends a lot of the time in the garage while I often hop on my mildly breathed upon moped for running into town :freak:.

Well... I keep turning yours and everyone else's advice over in my head (solder bench time stuff... not that solder bench time isn't 100% full attention... but there's stripping and twisting wire time). Anyhoo: I still have hundreds of hours of work to do to finish the '66 chev pick-up project. I'll see how it runs down the road after all the other stuff is done... and the plan is: I suspect an LT-1, or the modern-day equal, won't cost anymore than the bed has cost... which is the plan: transplant the mill to an LT-1 if the existing motor is too high spirited.

And concerning John Law: Truth be known: I drive like grandma... 'cept I don't have a AAA sticker on my back bumper and I don't believe I've ever been in a bingo hall unless there was a concert being held in the bingo hall which I was a part of.

i understand that completely. when i sand i give it my full attention but my mind is always thinking about something deep in the background.

its like male multitasking. seriously, we can do both at the same time. i think its because we are using two different parts of our brain to do these things leaving the other free to think.

i also think when i solder. i cant help it.
