Members Paul Nick
Can the Vox AC30 head effectively and safely power a pair of 4-ohm (12-inch) speakers? Will it affect the sound quality? Will it possibly hurt the amp?
Members DeepEnd
If the speakers are wired in series, presenting an 8 Ohm load, then yes. If you mean you want to connect a single 4 Ohm speaker to each output, then no. Here's a link to the manual: https://48r18hv56p93dbg741fo98ui-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/AC_C1_C2_V212C_OM_EFGSJ10e.pdf If you're going to connect the head to a single 8 Ohm cab set the impedance selector to 8 Ohms. You'll find the information you need on page 10.
Members Paul Nick
Well, the 4-ohm speakers in question are the pair in a Peavey Classic (the amp died but the speaks are fine) which are wired together. Does this mean they're "in series"? Thanks for your response!
Members DeepEnd
Here's a diagram courtesy of Koch amps. Note that the speakers used are 8 Ohms each: My guess without seeing them is the speakers are wired in series because few amps can handle a 2 Ohm load, which is what two 4 Ohm speakers in parallel would be. Members Paul Nick
I agree. The basic hookup is the standard for a 2-12 combo--the cable from the amp hooked to one speaker, which then has a connection to the other. Series, right? Thanks. Members Mr.Grumpy
Here's a link with a more detailed (and larger) illustration. You can skip the technical stuff at the top, but just look at the "Example 2" and "Example 3" to see the difference between series and parallel wiring. You want to wire your speakers like Example 2. Amplifier output goes to the - terminal on one speaker, the + terminal on the other speaker, then a wire jumper connects the remaining - and + terminals together. https://www.amplifiedparts.com/tech-articles/speaker-impedance-power-handling-and-wiring
