Members Ian Lockwood
Hi all, I have a Roland Spirit Bass 30 amp that starts to distort like a tube amp over about 5 on the volume control. I'm not sure if this is intentional or not!? I assume not on a solid state bass amp, but haven't got any reference to know for sure. I've opened it up and can't see any leaking capacitors etc. to suggest there's an issue with the electronics and the speaker is not torn. Anyone got one who can confirm either way? Thanks! Members Mr.Grumpy
This is very common on bass guitar practice amps. Most likely nothing's wrong with the amp. They're just designed with more gain than they can amplify cleanly. I have a newer Acoustic B30 practice amp and it's the same way, it's starts distorting at about 5 on the volume. Members DeepEnd
Hi and welcome to the Forums. As usual, Mr.Grumpy is correct. 30 Watts isn't a lot for a bass amp and a solid state amp will tend to distort if you drive it hard enough. It's not necessarily "on purpose" but it's a result of the amp's basic character.
Members Ian Lockwood
Thanks guys, wasn't sure - the fact it needed reasonable volume suggested it wasn't broken in any way, but equally halfway on the volume didn't seem that high to get distortion.
