differences between cheap and expensive electric guitars

Recommended Posts

Wood, electronics, frets nicely done, hardware. What are you calling Cheap. It's not like the 60's where the cheap guitars were barely playable. Now there is maybe a 20% difference in them at best.

The finish. Cheap guitars have poly finishes and expensive guitars have nitro finishes.

Not true. There some very nice stuff out there that is not inexpensive and has a urethane finish.

The Gretsch Professional  product line is a mix. Black Falcons are finished in urethane and the 6120's are finished in a mix of both Nitro and urethane.

Taylor immediately comes to mind. They're primarily known for acoustics but they've used catalyzed poly for years.

We're living in an age of great inexpensive guitars.

You can order necks and bodies from GFS, Dragon Fire guitars or Warmoth and create a guitar that's made better than the big brand companies.

Plus, Epiphone, Squire make guitars that are equal and when modified can surpass the big parent companies standards.

Gotta love the Golden Age of great inexpensive guitars !!!!

Back in the late 1970's, inexpensive guitars had very cheap tuners with plastic inserts in the headstocks, cheap plastic nuts and non wax potted pick ups .... How we've come a long way !!!!

Solid wood vs. laminate, which changes resonance.

Quality and type of wood - plain basswood vs. mahogany vs. maple, rosewood, rosewood, ebony, etc.

Quality of components (pots, caps, pickups, bridge saddles, etc.)

Fingerboard material

Assembly details - fit and finish, binding, inlays, etc.

Sound quality (subjective, but there IS a difference).

Setup details - neck stress, fret accuracy, bridge placement, etc.

Resale value, bragging rights, ego.

Cheap guitars are made in Asia?

Tell my $2100 MSRP Eastman that. Or my Peerless at $1300 MSRP.

i’m glad all of my guitars were cheap, tho.
