Members WRGKMC
Not sure what you mean by good distortion to bypass. Do you mean a unit you should avoid buying or a unit that contains a True bypass. Metal Zone used to be a big favorite of heavy metal players. Prior to that was the Heavy Metal HM-2 which in fact was a pedal a buddy of mine used back in the 80's so I was quite familiar with its sound. I was never a big fan of either probably because I played more blues and classic rock stuff where the drive came from the amp instead of a pedal. Most of the multi effect pedals I have can nail both sounds if I ever need them. I still prefer the lighter touch of a Marshall governor for the heavy stuff though. Boss has its own unique things which is good but it is a bit generic sounding.
Members 1001gear
Just sacrasm. The only usable sound is the scooped metal chug and that won't cut through toilet paper so you have to write around that one sound which Metal does nothing for me so that's the extent of that. I get much better sounding stuff stacking and boosting.
Phil O'Keefe
So far it's still Metal Zone. Yup - that's definitely a contender for best distortion to bypass... or pass by.
