It's a clever idea, but I still think THE best approach was the one that Weed used in Seattle, back in the day. Too bad they were sabotaged by Microsoft changing its DRM scheme...and the lack of a Mac version hurt them, too.

 

This article explains the model really well. What really intrigued me is it didn't just level the playing field for distribution, but for A&R as well - all the users essentially became both talent scouts and A&R people, and got paid for it. Brilliant.
