Members FloridaFrailer
I'll be visiting an ailing friend in South Florida very soon. I wondered if anyone had any tips on finding gigs in a new town? Just curious what everyone's approach is?
Moderators daddymack Posted September 10, 2016 Moderators Share Posted September 10, 2016 Check the local paper. They will usually have a list of places where people are performing. Also check local music store, and chat up the employees, because they usually are the ones with the better gigs in small towns.
Members Notes_Norton
Gigs are getting harder and harder to come by. Fortunately we established ourselves in the 1980s, and it was difficult then. Networking with other musicians and music stores about where you land in South Florida. There is a lot of variety from town to town. Retirement communities, Latin American areas, Country & Western towns, current pop, and so on. Check papers and Craigslist too. Where will you land? Members Shaster
Can't help with suggestions other than I just met a very nice fellow from an off the beaten path town in Florida. He asked for George Strait's Marina Del Rey and seemed truly shocked when I didn't know it. I wound up doing a bunch of classic Country for him and his party of fifteen, and that saved my butt. Florida is apparently a musical mixed bag.
Members FloridaFrailer
Working on doing a gig at an RV park in Homestead. That should cover the cost of staying. Hope to work south from there. I have some friends in Key West, but would prefer to work it from the other end of the keys.
Moderators daddymack Posted September 13, 2016 Moderators Share Posted September 13, 2016 I didn't know George had bought Marina del Rey, heck I didn't know Spielberg was selling... ...then again, I can't afford to even eat there anymore... Members Notes_Norton
I'm quite a bit north so the advice of what to play might be wrong. Lots of Caribbean people are around there, (Latin American music, soca, reggae) but in an RV park you will also find some northerners having a vacation. Look at their age and dress for clues. Check out booking agents in the phone book or on-line too. October through Easter is our busy season, so you have that working for you. Good luck,Bob
