Excellent article. I have the opposite problem. Romplers dominate my mixes. The big problem I have is fitting non-digital instruments like guitar or voice, into a digital mix. Digital instruments are clean, quiet. Old electric arch-tops or mic'd acoustic guitars are not.

In the mix stage, if you have a problem with a keyboard/synth track being buried in the mix yet don't really want to turn up the fader, add a distortion/overdrive plugin insert to the track and ad a very subtle amount of distortion (turn it up gradually until you start to hear it "pop out" of the mix. Presto!
