Moderators MrKnobs Posted June 18, 2016 Moderators Posted June 18, 2016 Such stress experienced by a few users........! . It's a LOT more than a few! Terry D.
Members techristian Posted August 22, 2016 Author Members Posted August 22, 2016 The latest Win10 update (from approx Aug 11 2016) COMPLETELY TRASHED my perfectly operating studio tower ! None of the "restore" or "go back to earlier version" buttons work ! I just completed a fresh install of Win10 weeks earlier. I haven't yet been able to restore Windows 10 to that system. I'm having some trouble burning the Windows 10 *.ISO to a dvd. (Unknown to me,some of my dvds, sitting on a piano bench, were exposed to sunlight for a long time. They work fine on burns under 3gb but W10 is 4.5gb) Return here for more "updates" . Dan
Members Anderton Posted August 24, 2016 Members Posted August 24, 2016 I told her "So you came to their supervisor and carelessly accused one of them of hosting porn? You couldn't distinguish between them because they're both Mexicans? Do you realize how serious that is? Do you realize what might happen to your job if I report this?" After that I OWNED her and could do just about anything. That's brilliant! As to W10...I decided to go all in when it was free. I've had two issues: The drivers for Roland's Octa-Capture had to be downloaded again, but Windows prompted me and did so automatically. I had to re-authorize Addictive Drums because the machine ID changed. Other than that, it's been very smooth sailing. I'm not minimizing that other people experience problems, and maybe I just lead a charmed life, but I would not want to go back to Windows 7. The multi-client MIDI alone is worth it, but the virtual desktops, improved audio stack, etc. are welcome additions.

Phil O'Keefe Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 ^^^ That kind of stuff is exactly why I'm so wary of automatic / forced "updates."
Members Mandolin Picker Posted August 27, 2016 Members Posted August 27, 2016 This kinda stuff is just another reason why my Windows machine is not connected to the Internet. I have a stable version of Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum runs just fine. No issues with drivers (as we got those fixed in the initial install). If Sonar needs to be updated, I use my Linux box to connect to the Cakewalk site and download any updates. Forced automatic updates is a disaster waiting to happen. Wait until someone (or some organization) is able to hijack the Windows update process. It will be a royal mess for not just individuals, but business as well.
Members Mandolin Picker Posted August 27, 2016 Members Posted August 27, 2016 And we just saw this - the latest update apparently causes Windows to crash (BSOD) when you plug in your Kindle device. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/08/kindle-crashes-and-broken-powershell-something-isnt-right-with-windows-10-testing/ And the hits just keep on coming.....

Members electrow Posted August 27, 2016 Members Posted August 27, 2016 I posted this on the GS forum: Windows 10 is intentionally interruptive by design (IIOS) compared to operating systems of the past. Since this is the last OS I don’t see how an IIOS bodes well for DAW stability in the future. We can no longer freeze our systems like we could in the past as is obvious. How timely will product developers be in updating Apps and drivers as determined by MS’s schedule? Let alone all the time we waste, as minor as it may be, making adjustments, resolving issues. Even if its only one musician in a hundred or a thousand is not the point, the point is that we no longer have the most effective tool to prevent unwanted meddling which is freezing or rolling back the update. The landscape for control – hence stability has changed with Win10. Now it seems all Win10 users have unwittingly become beta testers. I know, I should have read the EULA where it states this. Mandolin Picker is right: "...Forced automatic updates is a disaster waiting to happen."
Members 1001gear Posted August 27, 2016 Members Posted August 27, 2016 Not helpful if you use/depend on Powershell. I'm ok with the breakage but Admoes might be in withdrawal.
Members 1001gear Posted August 27, 2016 Members Posted August 27, 2016 Looking into Ubuntu or suitable variant. Zorin is tempting but I can't find the latest version.
Members Mandolin Picker Posted August 27, 2016 Members Posted August 27, 2016 Looking into Ubuntu or suitable variant. Zorin is tempting but I can't find the latest version. Look at Linux Mint (linuxmint.com). I have that on a desktop and a laptop and it works well. Another thing that may be of help eventually (although it still has a way to go) is the ReactOS (reactos.org). A Windows compatible OS that is still early in the development cycle, but recently they have started making significant process.
