Been watching the Metropolitan Opera on live Broadcast HD

We've been attending the live broadcasts of Wagner's Ring Cycle. The sound has been very good for covering the orchestra and singers with mics no where near. Was wondering if anyone knows how they're doing it. I don't think they're using spot mics. My guess would be an overhead about eight rows back. (Can barely hear the crowd in the background.) It's got to be an interesting approach to cover an event that has no PA running in the Met while providing a live feel in theaters all over the world. (And not missing any of the action. OK, the action is occasionally at a snail's pace. It's Wagner, you've got to expect that death scenes will last 10+ minutes. It takes a long time to sing about dying.)
