Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 21, 2015 Members Posted August 21, 2015 Doesn't have to be your snare. Just though like the drum set of the day, I'd start a snare thread. Show any thing that you find. Wacky, strange, unusual, killer, large, small, you name it.
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 21, 2015 Author Members Posted August 21, 2015 This thread was inspired by this SJC snare I just saw. I thought this was too interesting not to show.
Members 1001gear Posted August 22, 2015 Members Posted August 22, 2015 Posted this a while ago. Found it on Googbay. Don't recall the maker can't quite make out the brand.
Members Mikeo Posted August 22, 2015 Members Posted August 22, 2015 I have always wanted one of these. I'm not sure what a good one would be. Maple ? Steel? IDK
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 24, 2015 Author Members Posted August 24, 2015 Maple would get my vote.
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 24, 2015 Author Members Posted August 24, 2015 That is simply stunning. While it may sound brilliant, this drum would get a place on a pedestal in a glass box with ambient lighting!
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 24, 2015 Author Members Posted August 24, 2015 SJC is putting out some interesting stuff these days. Seems since the show "The Profit" they are cranking. This in and odd snare: And while also odd, this is really cool (from a user- not a glamour shot)
Members Drumstix101 Posted August 25, 2015 Members Posted August 25, 2015 Here are my "go to" snare drums. While I do have a few wood snares I tend to use metal snare drums a majority of the time. Up until a few years ago, the '67 Supra was the only drum I used. I did buy this drum in '67 and it probably would be my choice if I was limited to having only one snare drum. The Black Magic gets called upon for a lot of outdoor gigs, and to me, sounds just as good as a Black Beauty. I know that a lot of people would disagree with me, but I am just happy with the Black Magic. The last drum here is the Ludwig Venus. It's a brass piccolo with an odd size, 14" x 3.7". I have nothing but good things to say about this drum. It is responsive, and surprisingly has a wide tuning range. I have always wanted a shallower drum and would always walk away from the piccolos I tried because I wasn't satisfied with something about the drum I was looking at. Either I didn't like the sound, or the construction or whatever. A few years ago I saw this drum at a drum show, tried it out and had to have it!
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 25, 2015 Author Members Posted August 25, 2015 Man, that you purchased that drum in 1967 and still use it as your go to today is super cool. Ignorantly, I let my 64 6.4X14 super phonic go and I kick myself to this day. There is something about that first snare that you get dialed in that really can never be reproduced.
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 25, 2015 Author Members Posted August 25, 2015 Here is a little Pork Pie love for today:
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 25, 2015 Author Members Posted August 25, 2015 Oh... I like!!! That is a thing of beauty.
Members 1001gear Posted August 26, 2015 Members Posted August 26, 2015 Wow. I'd like to see this shot with a drone in 4K !
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 27, 2015 Author Members Posted August 27, 2015 Here is a little Popcorn Snare from DW (yes, that's what they are calling it).

I still have my first snare drum. I got it for Christmas in 1969 (Santa got it used somewhere). Pre-serial, white reso interior, red felt muffler. Date stamp March 23 1963.
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted August 31, 2015 Author Members Posted August 31, 2015 Be still my heart. That is a great classic snare. Love the throw off on this model. Now if you could only find the kit to match! That drum was made during an era when they cared about making great drums and the thinking was that if you built a great drum the money would come. Now it is about building drums for money. Just an opinion mind you ... Great drum!
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted September 8, 2015 Author Members Posted September 8, 2015 A Raw shell as engraved by my pal and master artist, John Aldridge. This guy has mad skills!
Members FitchFY Posted September 11, 2015 Members Posted September 11, 2015 I refinished this Ludwig Black Galaxy from someone's trash pile. New strainer and snares, derusted everything, fixed the muffler, and brought it back to full life. It gives that great "blat"-rolite sound from the old Ludwigs and gets fairly consistent use in a few of my projects. I named it "Black Earl" after my grandfather.
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted September 14, 2015 Author Members Posted September 14, 2015 Who doesn't like a little Marvel Comic Action!?!
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted September 16, 2015 Author Members Posted September 16, 2015 How about this funky thing from Sonor!
Members Dendy Jarrett Posted September 25, 2015 Author Members Posted September 25, 2015 I must say - Ronn Dunnett is putting out some beautiful drums these days! Here are two released this week. Who wouldn't want these!
